Tottenham Hotspur have been looking to bring in a new defensive midfielder in the ongoing summer transfer window as Daniel Levy scrambles along to find a suitable player for the framework that incoming head coach Thomas Frank is expected to put through at Hotspur Way, and this is where Douglas Luiz’ name has come forth a lot in the past week. The Lilywhites have been exploring possibilities to sign the former Aston Villa star, but they are still looking out for whether to pull the trigger on him or go for other alternatives, namely, Palhinha and Kobbie Mainoo.
Now the North Londoners have received a blow in the pursuit of the Brazilian international, as Everton are ‘pushing’ up their pursuit of signing Douglas Luiz this summer with fresh talks underway as David Moyes looks to bring him back to English shores, per TBR Football. The former Manchester United manager has been looking to reconstruct his midfield at Everton, and he has made Luiz his top target as the Merseysiders look to take advantage of the struggles that Luiz has had in his first year at Juventus.
But Tottenham faithful will be keeping their eyes on this one given that Luiz was heavily linked with Tottenham earlier this window, and although Everton are pushing the hardest right now, the Lilywhites haven’t gone away just yet, and Daniel Levy is still sitting at the table for his signature.
If we walk back to the start of the ongoing summer window, Tottenham was one of the first clubs to see whether Luiz is available or not, and that was when Juventus made it clear that the Brazilian could leave. Moreover, the fact that he fit into playing the #6 role the way the incoming Lilywhites head coach Thomas Frank likes to operate makes him a more assuring option. But there is only one thing slowing a possible transfer down? It is the need for Tottenham to shift Yves Bissouma first.
The report also states that Luiz is “desperate” to come back to the Premiership, and given that there are a number of clubs looking to sign him, with the likes of Nottingham Forest and West Ham also interested in signing the Brazilian this summer, this adds to the complexity of any transfer to Tottenham materialising.
We will see how this one goes, but at the moment it looks like Everton are in the driving seat, and Levy has to catch up if he is serious about bringing him to Tottenham.
