Inter Miami were handed a harsh reality check ahead of their game against Cincinnati FC, with Major League Soccer confirming a one-match ban for Lionel Messi and Jordi Alba. With both players pulling out of the All-Star game against the Liga MX All-Stars, fans were curious to see what stance MLS officials would take.

While fans expected the players to walk away despite their indiscretion, MLS left everyone shocked by confirming the ban, citing their official rules earlier this Friday. However, the decision has come with its fair share of criticism, as multiple experts have lashed out against it, considering how important Lionel Messi has been to Major League Soccer's recent growth.

Lionel Messi defended following suspension

Former New England Revolution head coach Steve Nicol voiced his frustration with MLS's decision during his latest appearance on ESPN Futbol Americas. Nicol lashed out against the decision, stating, "If I'm Messi and anybody at Inter Miami, I am not lifting a finger to help MLS again. Forget it! I'm sorry. I think it's a joke."

Nicol was one of the many who had earlier defended Lionel Messi and Jordi Alba for their decision to skip the MLS All-Star game. The ex-Scottish international claimed both players reserved the right to decide the games they wanted to play, considering the harsh schedule of the ongoing league.

With Messi absent from the game, Inter Miami were forced to play a goalless draw against Cincinnati. The team is now down to fifth spot in the standings, while Cincinnati, with the draw, have dropped to second place in the Eastern Conference with Philadelphia taking the top spot with 50 points to its name from 25 games.
