Real Madrid’s start to the 2024-25 season has been far from straightforward. Points have been dropped in four out of 11 matches (D3, L1), and because these of these winless fixtures have come in La Liga, it means that they currently trail bitter rivals Barcelona by three points.

Many expected Real Madrid to cakewalk their way to a second consecutive La Liga title, especially with Kylian Mbappe having been added into Carlo Ancelotti’s squad. However, this has not proven to be the case so far, and as Emmanuel Petit has told Football España alongside BetBrain, the reason why is pretty clear.

“There’s a lot of things that Real Madrid need to manage, such as confidence and ego. The main problem for Real Madrid is not Mbappe – it is in midfield. Toni Kroos isn’t there, and Luka Modric isn’t the same player as he once was. For me, Kroos was the main man, and he is missed so much to the point that it doesn’t feel like the same team. They have huge quality as individuals, but it doesn’t feel like a team anymore. The last few years, they won trophies because they were playing as a team – at the moment, they are struggling to have that same feeling.”

There’s no doubt that Kroos in particular has been a massive miss for Real Madrid. He was arguably one of the best players in Europe in his final season as a professional footballer, and adapting to live without him has been a major challenge for Ancelotti, who with hope that the second international break has given him time to figure out a solution.

Real Madrid opted not to replace Kroos during the summer, instead relying on existing players to step up. Eduardo Camavinga and Aurelien Tchouameni are two players to have gained more prominence, although Petit is unconvinced by his fellow Frenchmen.

“He has quality, but you can’t ask Camavinga to do what Kroos or Modric were doing – it’s impossible. What they did was priceless, and there aren’t many players that can do the same things.

“Since he went to Real Madrid, he has improved as a player – he’s played in different positions too. But has he done enough as a midfielder to show that he should be a nailed starter? I’m not sure yet, I’m still waiting for him to show that. It’s the same for Tchouameni too, I’m not convinced by him either. For me, he’s better as a central defender.”

Real Madrid are entering into another crucial run of fixtures, which includes the first Clasico of the season next weekend. They need to step up if they are to overhaul Barcelona, although there’s plenty of time for their problems to be solved. However, it is certainly easier said than done.

Tottenham eyeing Manchester City veteran as an alternative to Morgan Gibbs-White

Tottenham Hotspur are now eyeing Jack Grealish after missing out on Morgan Gibbs-White The 2025/26 season is a little different for us. We are back in the Champions League, and this time, no coincidence, we have achieved this by beating Manchester United in the Europa League final in the 2024/25 season. The club are making decisive moves this summer. Now we have a new manager, Thomas Frank, and the style of football we will play is also bound to change. Frank’s aggressive thinking is giving the team a new look. Mohammed Kudus has already joined the squad, and Mathys Tel has also been transferred permanently, but the club might not stop here. Tottenham’s situation have been mixed in the last few seasons. The team faced ups and downs during the era of Antonio Conte and then Ange Postecoglou. Being out of the Champions League, then the journey to the Europa League, and finally winning the title – this journey was not easy. During this time, many players came and went, but now, with a new thinking, the club are building a balanced and aggressive team. Every transfer seems to be happening as per a specific plan. A few weeks ago, there were reports that Tottenham had activated Morgan Gibbs-White’s £60 million release clause. Even though the medical was ready, Nottingham Forest raised legal objections to the process. After this, everything stopped, and now Gibbs-White has signed a new three-year contract with Forest. Spurs have officially abandoned this transfer. Jack Grealish in sight Football Insider‘s report suggests that Tottenham are now showing interest in Manchester City’s Jack Grealish. Last season, Grealish got a chance in the starting eleven in the Premier League only seven times. He was an important part of City’s treble-winning in 2023, but last season, he remained on the bench most of the time. City are now ready to sell the 30-year0old, and Spurs are looking at him as an alternative to Morgan Gibbs-White. The Englishman’s playing style is based on his dribbling, ability to draw fouls and ability to play on both flanks. Such a player can find a place in Frank’s fast, attacking and creative style of football. The special thing is that Grealish is a big-match player; he has proven himself on the big stage. However, he is now 30 years old and did not get much chance to play last season. What should Spurs do? In our opinion, signing Jack Grealish could be an interesting option, but there are risks in it. Grealish can fit the type of football that Thomas Frank wants. He moves the ball forward quickly, draws defenders and creates chances. Such a player can be very important in our system, but his reduced game time last season and injury chances are a cause of concern. Also, his high salary can make our transfer strategy a bit difficult. Gibbs-White was a young option who also had resale value. With Grealish, we will not get this advantage. However, if City are willing to let him go on the cheap, this deal could be worth it. The club just need to work on squad depth so that we don’t have an alternative option if Grealish gets injured. Overall, this transfer could be a turning point for Tottenham in Frank’s new era.

Cowboys make questionable move amid Micah Parsons stalemate

The Dallas Cowboys extended one of their stars Sunday, just not the one fans wanted them to pay. At Cowboys training camp Saturday, Dallas fans serenaded owner Jerry Jones with "Pay Micah [Parsons]" chants. The EDGE, of course, is set to play on the fifth-year option of his rookie contract this season. Jones must not have been listening. He gave tight end Jake Ferguson a new contract instead. Dallas and the 26-year-old pass-catcher agreed to a four-year, $52M contract extension, via NFL Media's Ian Rapoport. This move seems head-scratching. Parsons has won the 2021 Defensive Rookie of the Year and earned two first-team All-Pro nods since the Cowboys took him with pick No. 12 in the 2021 NFL Draft. The 26-year-old EDGE also finished second in Defensive Player of the Year voting during the 2021 and 2022 seasons. Ferguson, meanwhile, is solid but not elite. In three seasons with the Cowboys, the 2022 fourth-round pick has made one Pro Bowl and has never finished with more than 761 receiving yards in a season. An extension for Parsons will devour future cap space. The Cowboys may be worried about that after giving quarterback Dak Prescott (four years, $240M) and wide receiver CeeDee Lamb (four years, $136M) long-term deals in 2024. Pittsburgh Steelers EDGE T.J. Watt signed a lucrative three-year, $123M extension on July 17, making him the league's highest-paid non-QB. Parsons could command a similar contract. If cap space is Dallas' primary concern, however, why would it extend Ferguson? He's now set to be the NFL's seventh-highest-paid TE. The Cowboys waited to extend Lamb and Prescott just before the start of the 2024 season. They may be doing the same with Parsons. The star defender has said, "Ownership is always gonna make [contract negotiations] drag out." Regardless, the Cowboys should've paid Parsons before Ferguson. That's a much bigger priority for the team.

Cleveland Guardians Slapped With Bad News Before Trade Deadline

The Cleveland Guardians are quite a mystery heading into the MLB trade deadline, as no one seems to know whether they will buy, sell or possibly even do nothing before July 31. The Guardians are hovering around .500, but they are still smack dab in the middle of the American League Wild Card race. That's in spite of losing 10 straight just before the All-Star break. Even with Cleveland remaining in contention, there are some who believe the Guardians might sell given their conservative nature, but talk show host Bruce Drennan has provided some rather bad news for the team in that regard: the players they might want to move don't have much value. “No top prospects for a big bat, and I don’t necessarily see us selling players, like Carlos Santana or Lane Thomas. What can you get in return?” Drennan said. Drennan has a point. Santana and Thomas are both impending free agents, and neither has been all that good this season. Santana owns a .665 OPS, and Thomas has been on and off the injured list while hitting just .160 on the year. Of course, the Guardians would surely be able to land a hefty return for players like Steven Kwan and Emmanuel Clase, but it does not seem like Cleveland is going to move either of those two stars. Perhaps the Guardians will surprise some people and go all in by adding pieces at the deadline, but that isn't exactly in their nature. We'll see what happens before the end of the months, but it stands to reason that Cleveland might just stand pat, as Drennan anticipates. Read More Cleveland Guardians Coverage

Mariners' Cal Raleigh makes history with 40th home run

Seattle Mariners catcher Cal Raleigh clubbed his 40th home run of the season on Saturday night against the Los Angeles Angels, not only extending his major league lead but also making him the first player in baseball to reach the 40-home run mark this season. It also helped him make some history. With his 40th home run, Raleigh became both the first catcher and the first switch-hitter in baseball history to reach the 40 home run mark before the end of July. Here is a look at his 40th home run. He is already in the process of having one of the best seasons ever for a Mariners player, and also one of the best seasons ever for a catcher, for any team. Especially when you add in his defense, where he is one of the best defensive catchers in the league. His only serious competition for the American League MVP Award remains New York Yankees outfielder Aaron Judge. But with Judge sidelined for some time now due to an elbow injury, it might open the door for Raleigh to put himself in the lead for that award.
