Tottenham Hotspur star Cristian Romero makes admission over his future amid strong interest from Atletico Madrid

Tottenham Hotspur will have a lot of work to do to improve their squad next season. As well as they fared in the Europa League and won the title, a 17th-placed finish in the Premier League is not acceptable, and it showcases just how much work is needed in the coming months to rebuild the squad.

The future of Ange Postecoglou remains up in the air at White Hart Lane, though the general feeling is that he will be sacked. It is difficult to see him keep his job after a forgettable domestic campaign. However, the lack of clarity of the Australian’s future will not only have an impact on potential signings, but also jeopardise futures of the players currently at his disposal.

One player who continues to be linked away with a move from Spurs is Cristian Romero. Atletico Madrid have prioritised the signing of the Tottenham star in a bid to bolster their defensive unit. He has already held private talks with coach Diego Simeone over a potential move to Atletico Madrid.

Cristian Romero, who produced a Man of the Match display in Spurs’ Europe League final win over Manchester United in Bilbao, isn’t likely to hang around much longer to wait and see what happens with Postecoglou. Atletico are planning to open concrete talks with the North London club this week, with CEO Miguel Angel Gil Marin expected to take charge of the negotiations for the Spanish side.

The Argentinean international has already admitted his desire to play in La Liga. However, in an exclusive interview with reputed journalist Gaston Edul, the centre-back gave Spurs fans a slight ray of hope when asked about his future.

“I’m going to give my best until the last day I’m here,” Romero said.

“I’m happy. They make me feel like an important player. Whatever the future holds for me, I’m welcome.”

Romero’s words should give the Tottenham fans some hope of him staying at the club for another season, at least. The Argentina defender still has two years left on his contract, which puts Spurs in a good position to negotiate and get a good price. Reliable Spurs podcast Lilywhite Rose owner John Wenham thinks Tottenham will either agree a new contract or allow the 27-year-old to leave this summer.

It is not going to be easy for Atletico to poach Romero from Tottenham, who are expected to do everything possible to keep hold of their best defender after winning the Europa League. By qualifying for next season’s Champions League, Levy has the tools to persuade Romero to stay at the club and match his lofty ambitions of competing for trophies in the future.

That said, the Lilywhites must show their intent and bring in some quality players this summer in a bid to not only bolster the squad but also keep hold of seasoned-campaigners such as Romero.
