Fabrizio Romano has shared a fresh update on Harry Maguire’s situation at Manchester United, with reports suggesting talks over a new contract may be on the horizon.

Under Ruben Amorim, Maguire has held onto his place in the squad and remained an important voice in the dressing room. His experience and leadership have been valuable assets during what’s been a period of transition for the club.

Maguire has found himself well-suited to Amorim’s tactical setup, often playing in the middle of a back three. The 32-year-old has made seven appearances across all competitions so far this season.

The former United captain is currently under contract until next summer. From January, he will be free to speak with clubs outside of England and could sign a pre-contract agreement if he decides to move on from Old Trafford.

Fabrizio Romano says the most important part of Man Utd and Harry Maguire’s talks

Manchester United activated an extension in Harry Maguire’s contract back in January, during a season where their league form left plenty to be desired.

Maguire would have been free to leave at the end of the previous campaign, but the club decided to use that option to keep him around for another year.

Talks are now underway about a fresh deal, and according to Fabrizio Romano, salary terms are the main sticking point holding up progress.

“United are happy with Maguire, on and off the pitch, [and] also in terms of leadership,” Romano said on his YouTube channel. “Maguire is happy at Man United and would love to stay, but the numbers must be different.

“Can’t be the same contract [that] Harry Maguire had at Manchester United in recent years. So if they can agree on the numbers, on the financials of this new contract, Harry Maguire has a very good chance to stay at Manchester United and sign a new contract at the club.”

Maguire’s weekly wage has already dropped from £190,000 down to £140,000 after Manchester United missed out on Champions League football this season. Further reductions may be required if he wants a longer stay.

If no agreement is found over wages it could lead to his departure from Old Trafford when his current deal expires according to Fabrizio Romano.
