Reputed journalist Fabrizio Romano claims Tottenham signing Xavi Simons was one of the highlights of the summer transfer window

Tottenham Hotspur had a summer of setbacks before they landed two exciting attacking talents in European football.

The Lilywhites always wanted to bring in a creative midfielder in the summer transfer window, and having seen moves for both Morgan Gibbs-White and Eberechi Eze collapse, they acted swiftly to beat Chelsea to the signing of Xavi Simons from RB Leipzig.

There is particularly a lot of buzz within the Tottenham fanbase following the arrival of Xavi Simons. Regarded as one of European football’s hottest young talents, the Dutchman has joined Thomas Frank’s unit with a lot of fanfare and expectations. He will be expected to hit the ground running for the Lilywhites, who will be without James Maddison and Dejan Kulusevski- their two creative forces- for a long time.

Reputed journalist enjoyed breaking Xavi Simons’ move to Tottenham

Respected journalist Fabrizio Romano feels Spurs securing Simons’ signature was one of the highlights of the summer transfer window. The Italian has confirmed that he enjoyed breaking the news that the 22-year-old was on his way to Tottenham, after being heavily linked with a move to Chelsea.

“With Xavi Simons, it was in the middle of the night when the deal had this big change and the player decided to say yes to Tottenham and to complete his move,” Fabrizio Romano said on the latest episode of Market Madness podcast.

“When it’s during the night, it is always exciting for me because it’s something that doesn’t happen that often anymore in the market. That one was a great story. Also, Chelsea had been in control of this deal for a long time and then decided to move onto different plans, so seeing Tottenham sign the player was quite surprising.”

Simons could be a valuable long-term asset for Spurs

Chelsea were in control of the Simons situation for much of the summer, but Tottenham managed to persuade him to become a part of Frank’s project. Credit where its due, former chairman Daniel Levy handled this deal superbly and pulled off a major coup when no one was expecting it.

The Netherlands international was one of RB Leipzig’s standout players in the last couple of seasons, combining technical ability with sharp movement and eye for goal. His versatility in the final third makes him an attractive option for the north Londoners, allowing Frank the option to use him as per his tactics and game’s demands. The player also works his socks off without the ball, making him an ideal fit in Frank’s system.

Spurs fans will hope that Simons replicates the same form he has shown in the Bundesliga time and again and makes the team fluid in the final third. At 22, the ex-Paris Saint-Germain talent could easily become a valuable long-term asset for the capital club.
