Manchester United experienced another summer of significant change as Michael Carrick continued reshaping his squad for a return to the Champions League.

Much of the attention surrounded midfield, with Andrey Santos, Youri Tielemans and Carlos Baleba arriving to strengthen an area United wanted to transform.

There was movement elsewhere, too, while several familiar faces departed Old Trafford.

United’s defensive options have changed considerably across recent windows, with the likes of Raphael Varane, Victor Lindelof and Aaron Wan-Bissaka all leaving in recent years.

Another defender reached the end of his United journey this summer.

The club confirmed before the end of last season that he would depart once his contract expired.

That decision brought a four-year spell at Old Trafford to an end, but the defender has not been waiting long for his next opportunity.

FC Cincinnati complete deal for former Manchester United defender

FC Cincinnati have officially announced the signing of Tyrell Malacia, with the Dutch defender beginning a new chapter in Major League Soccer.

The American club confirmed on their official website that Malacia has signed a contract running until June 2027.

The agreement also includes an option covering the 2027/28 MLS season.

Malacia originally joined United from Feyenoord in July 2022 and made 50 appearances for the club.

His first campaign was comfortably his busiest, with the left-back featuring 39 times as Erik ten Hag’s side won the League Cup.

His United career was then severely disrupted by injury.

Malacia missed the entirety of the 2023/24 campaign before eventually returning to action and later spending part of 2024/25 on loan at PSV Eindhoven.

The 27-year-old leaves European football with considerable experience behind him. He previously made 136 appearances for Feyenoord and has also represented the Netherlands nine times.

FC Cincinnati general manager Chris Albright highlighted Malacia’s experience, quality on the ball and defensive instincts when welcoming him to the club.

For Malacia, the move finally provides a fresh start after several difficult years in which injuries prevented his United career from developing as initially hoped.
