‘Profit over results’… that has always been the motto for Tottenham during Daniel Levy’s tenure. The Lilywhites have not endured a lot of highs in the last two decades, and that is because of the way Levy has handled the North London club on and off-the-pitch. The club has just won two major trophies in this century, and that shows where the priorities lie for the owners and the Spurs hierarchy.
The Lilywhites finally managed to end a 17-year wait for a major trophy last month, after Ange Postecoglou’s men defied all odds and won the Europa League. And what did Daniel Levy proceed to do? The club chairman sacked Big Ange just two weeks after the historic achievement due to the poor Premier League campaign.
This just shows that Levy cares more about profits and funds than football results. The Spurs chairman is more concerned about qualifying for the Champions League, than to win silverware and end the trophy drought. This is exactly why the average tenure of a Tottenham manager lasts for less than two years. The constant change in management has taken the North London club to new lows in recent years.
Newly appointed Tottenham manager Thomas Frank has a massive task of handling the pressure of leading the club forward under the watchful eyes of Daniel Levy. The Danish tactician made it clear in his first official interview with the club that ‘alignment’ is key for the Lilywhites to succeed. And the Spurs boss wants to see the club’s hierarchy to follow the same goals and objectives as him.
Now, club icon Chris Waddle has warned Thomas Frank about the challenges he will face at N17. Speaking to OLBG.com, Waddle said,
“He’s going to find it very difficult because of what he’s allowed to bring in, not being allowed to sign a 29-, 30- or 31-year-old. They want to get players young and then accept bids to sell them on.”
The ex-Spurs player added,
“Spurs are looking for potential, they don’t go and buy proven 30-year-old players who are internationals and scoring goals every week, they don’t want a lad for three years and go on a free. It’s all about profit and I think Thomas Frank will find that difficult when he’s trying to build his side with the expectations upon him.”
Chris Waddle has suggested that Thomas Frank will find life tough at N17 as he will not be allowed to splash the cash on Premier League-proven players. The club icon added that the Lilywhites want young players in their ranks, as they could then end up selling them in the future and earn a profit. Waddle insists that Daniel Levy cares about profit and that is why the Dane will find it tough to live up to expectations.
To everyone’s surprise, Daniel Levy has put out a bold statement suggesting that the North London club is now aiming to win the Premier League and the Champions League in the near future. The fans will now hope that the Spurs chairman will put his money where the mouth is and actually delivers on his promise. That will start with bringing in new players that would suit Thomas Frank’s system heading into next season.
