Florian Wirtz’s dad addresses whether his son regrets picking Liverpool over Bayern Munich

Florian Wirtz has not had the easiest time handling the expectations that came with his move to Liverpool.

There was plenty of excitement when he signed, with many expecting him to make an immediate impact on the team. So far, though, he has found it tough going.

Wirtz has only managed two assists for the Reds so far, and he has even started a few games on the bench.

Looking back, it seemed like a major win for Liverpool when they beat out Bayern Munich for his signature, especially when staying in Germany looked like the safer option for him.

The gamble has not paid off yet, and there is already talk about whether he is starting to regret his decision. But now his father has stepped in to address those questions directly.

Carrying a £116m price tag is a challenge for anyone, especially someone adjusting to life in a new country at just 22 years old.

That weight, combined with Liverpool’s poor form, has put Wirtz under the microscope. Supporters have not held back in their criticism, either.

A lot of players might second-guess their decisions after that kind of pressure, but Wirtz’s father insists his son is content with the path he chose.

He said to Koner Stadt-Anzeiger: “Florian is a young man who wants to prove himself in a new environment, and less than a third of the season has been played.

“So far, everything is going as expected; it’s a completely normal settling-in process, entirely independent of any transfer fee.

“And if you look at the statistics more closely, you can see that Florian’s stats regarding his involvement in the game are already quite good; only assists and goals are still pending.”

“Florian consciously took a step to become an even better footballer. And he doesn’t regret it at all.

“He’s doing well in Liverpool, he looks forward to every training session, and he’s settled in with the team. We’re 100 percent satisfied with how things are going so far.”

Florian Wirtz finding a rhythm away from club duties

Whenever Wirtz joins up with the German squad, he looks more relaxed and plays with a lot more confidence.

That probably has a lot to do with how familiar he is with the players in the national set-up. He has grown up playing alongside many of them, and it shows in how comfortable he looks on the pitch.

It is fair to think that once he finds his footing at Liverpool, that same comfort will start to show through there as well.

From now until March could be an important stretch for him, as there are not any international breaks coming up. This period might be just what he needs to really settle into his role at Anfield.

Maybe Arne Slot should think about giving him a bit more freedom within the side, similar to what he gets with Germany. That is when Wirtz tends to play his best football, though it is hard to say if that approach would translate well in the Premier League.
