Football legend Pele reportedly has bronchopneumonia

There's a new and concerning health update on football living legend Pele amid the ongoing FIFA World Cup.

According to ESPN, tests at Albert Einstein Hospital in Sao Paulo have confirmed that Pele is dealing with bronchopneumonia. The news comes a day after it was learned that the 82-year-old had been hospitalized with "generalized swelling" possibly related to medication he's used regarding a tumor in his colon.

"Edson Arantes do Nascimento was hospitalised at Hospital Israelita Albert Einstein yesterday (29) for a reevaluation of the chemotherapy treatment for the colon tumor identified in September 2021," Albert Einstein Hospital said in a released statement. "After medical evaluation, the patient was taken to a common room, with no need for admission to a semi-intensive unit or ICU. The former player is in full control of vital functions and stable clinical condition."

It was reported in September 2021 that Pele spent time in an intensive care unit after he had a tumor removed from his colon. He has since completed multiple stints in the hospital for treatment.

Kely Nascimento, Pele's daughter, assured fans via an Instagram post shared on Wednesday the news about her father's status wasn't "dire."

"Lots of alarm in the media today concerning my dad's health. He is in the hospital regulating medication," Nascimento said. "There is no emergency or new dire prediction. I will be there for New Years and promise to post some pictures."

Meanwhile, ESPN reports that a source said "the medical staff reported the condition of anasarca, generalized edema and decompensated heart failure."

Pele is widely considered one of the greatest footballers and overall athletes in history. He famously was part of the Brazil squads that won the World Cup in 1958, 1962 and 1970.
