Goran Pandev admits he never imagined Christian Chivu would one day coach Inter, but sees similar qualities in his former teammate to treble-winning coach Jose Mourinho.
Speaking to La Repubblica ahead of the clash with Napoli, the ex-striker praised the Romanian’s charisma and communication, saying those skills are helping shape the team’s identity.
Pandev revealed he was surprised years ago by the idea of Chivu becoming Inter’s coach, but not by his leadership.
“I confess, I didn’t imagine him there back then. But he had charisma. You need it to be captain of Romania,” he noted, via FCInter1908.
Asked for a comparison, Pandev pointed to José Mourinho.
“In communication, both with players and with the media. He is skilful, ironic, effective,” he said, adding that Chivu’s way of handling pressure and messaging is key to today’s Inter.
Pandev also highlighted young talent, naming Bonny and Pio Esposito as the players who can shape the club’s future.
Having shared a dressing room with Bonny at Parma, he described him as “young, but already big,” and believes the pair complement each other well.
On the upcoming Napoli–Inter showdown, the former forward urged caution despite the positive feeling in the Nerazzurri camp.
He stressed that both sides arrive with European fatigue, but in contrasting moods after midweek results.
“The Inter win was convincing, Napoli disappointed. But in Serie A, Conte is a master,” he warned, predicting a match decided by moments of brilliance rather than tactics.
Pandev closed with a smile when asked who would win between the Inter of 2010 and today.
“Us, of course. But this Inter deserves respect and Chivu has earned it.”
