Manchester United’s season has been shaped not only by results on the pitch but also by the emotional narratives surrounding former players making dramatic returns.

With United competing across domestic fronts, every high-profile reunion has drawn intense attention from supporters eager to show where their loyalties lie.

The atmosphere around Old Trafford has been electric in recent weeks, particularly as debates continue around the club’s direction and leadership both on the men’s and women’s sides.

Fan sentiment has been vocal, raw and deeply divided, reflecting a fanbase more invested than ever in the club’s identity.

Against that backdrop, the return of one former favourite has sparked a reaction that few could have predicted.

It has now been revealed that Mary Earps posted a message to her Instagram account after her return to Old Trafford, thanking Manchester United fans for what she described as a “warm welcome”, despite receiving a mixed response throughout PSG’s 2-1 defeat.

The former Sports Personality of the Year was loudly booed by sections of the home crowd, while other supporters continued to cheer her throughout the Champions League clash.

Her return came at a time when the fallout from her newly released autobiography remains a major talking point within English football.

In the book, Mary Earps opens up about the breakdown of her relationship with Lionesses successor Hannah Hampton and expresses frustration with the way her Manchester United tenure ended.

The controversy appears to have played a major part in shaping the atmosphere at Old Trafford.

Earps was applauded during the warm-ups but jeered frequently during the match, with many United supporters counteracting those boos with cheers.

She still received applause when leaving the pitch after PSG’s third straight Champions League defeat of the campaign.

Earps conceded twice, first to Melvine Malard, before Fridolina Rolfo secured the winner on the hour mark.

Despite the tension surrounding her return, Mary Earps addressed the evening positively online, writing:
“Not the result we wanted but it was truly special to be back at Old Trafford last night.

“Thank you for the warm welcome back, it meant more than you know. Good luck for the rest of the season.”

Earps has previously stated that she hoped to finish her career at Manchester United.

She joined the club from Wolfsburg in 2019 and departed on a free transfer in 2024.

Her frustrations with the club centre on the leadership’s failure to invest adequately in the women’s setup.

After Euro 2022, United pledged to move the women’s team to Carrington alongside the men, but Earps and her teammates only gained access to the new women’s and academy building in summer 2023, which she felt made the announcement seem like a “publicity exercise.”

Following her Golden Glove-winning 2023 World Cup campaign, Arsenal reportedly submitted a £100,000 bid for her services, an offer United rejected without informing her.

She described the situation as “dizzying.”

She has since retired from England duty, bringing an end to her international career with the Lionesses.

Although she received a contract extension in 2023, United did not resume talks until the end of the 2023/24 season.

While a significant offer was eventually tabled, Earps felt the club were no closer to challenging for the Champions League and had failed to warn her that the women’s team would need to relocate again to accommodate Carrington renovations for the men.

She ultimately signed a two-year deal with PSG.

Her return to Old Trafford may have ended in defeat, but the reaction, and the message she shared afterwards, shows that the connection between Earps and United’s supporters remains as complex and emotionally charged as ever.
