Gary Lineker stunned by Roy Hodgson’s revelation on Liverpool’s ownership

Roy Hodgson’s spell as Liverpool manager never really clicked.

He followed Rafa Benitez, a hugely successful figure at Anfield, but the squad he inherited was clearly past its peak by then.

Hodgson lasted only six months in the job and did not leave much of a mark in that time.

Even though Fernando Torres had just moved on, Hodgson still had experienced players like Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher available to him. Expectations were higher than what he delivered.

Hired as Fenway Sports Group’s first act after taking over the club, his tenure coincided with their ownership. At the time, nobody, including the owners themselves, knew how it would turn out.

Before Hodgson’s time at Anfield, he had managed Fulham, Finland, and Viking, and many people thought he had the experience to do well at Liverpool.

However, he did not live up to those expectations, staying at the club for only six months.

After leaving the Reds, Hodgson quickly found another job with West Brom. But many fans still look back on his time at Liverpool with disappointment.

While talking to Gary Lineker on The Rest is Football Podcast, the veteran coach shared a story about FSG that surprised Lineker.

“The first thing that the new owners did when they come over, of course not really knowing much about the club. They went round to all these supporter clubs [and asked] ‘what do you think, have we got the right man?’”

Lineker could only respond: “Oh god.”

Hodgson went on, explaining what the fans were saying: “‘No, we’ve not, he’s no good, we should’ve done this’ and that was being backed up on the field because we weren’t winning.

“The team actually wasn’t really very good at that stage. We lost Torres, of course, [and] what was left of that team was Jamie [Carragher], I suppose.

“Steven Gerrard was still there, but I mean, really, you weren’t talking about the great Liverpool team that had done so well.”

FSG are far removed from the Roy Hodgson days

Liverpool’s supporters have not always been on board with FSG, and it has not been without reason.

The years before Klopp were mostly frustrating for fans, with only the occasional highlight to lift spirits.

But when Klopp took over from Brendan Rodgers, there was a clear sense that Liverpool had woken up. The team began to show real energy again, and supporters felt a renewed connection with the club.

Things have continued to improve, and now under Arne Slot, Liverpool look as strong as they ever have. The Reds have spent over £400million on new players this summer and are viewed as a genuine contender for both the Premier League and Champions League titles.

It has taken time to reach this point, but now that they are here, fans have every reason to enjoy what could be an outstanding period for the club.
