Manchester United have enjoyed a remarkable turnaround under Michael Carrick over the past few months, with the club securing a third-place Premier League finish and booking their place back in the UEFA Champions League.
After the disappointment of the previous campaign, which saw the Red Devils slump to a historic 15th-place finish, optimism has gradually returned around Old Trafford.
The club are also preparing for a huge future project away from the pitch, with plans for a new 100,000-seat stadium continuing to gather momentum.
Redeveloping Old Trafford is expected to cost close to £2 billion and could take up to five years to complete, making the coming years crucial for the club’s long-term future.
However, fresh reports suggest another major change could be brewing behind the scenes.
According to Bloomberg, some members of the Glazer family are now exploring the possibility of selling part or all of their holdings in Manchester United after more than two decades of ownership.
The Glazers completed their takeover of the club in 2005, but their tenure has regularly been met with criticism from supporters, with protests against the ownership becoming a common sight over the years.
The latest report claims that several US-based members of the family have held discussions regarding a potential sale of their shares.
Those open to selling are also believed to be attempting to convince other family members to follow suit and participate in a wider divestment.
News of a possible ownership shift immediately caught the attention of investors.
Manchester United’s share price rose by seven per cent on the New York Stock Exchange following the reports, pushing the club’s valuation to approximately £2.7 billion ($3.64bn), according to figures compiled by LSEG.
The developments come two years after Sir Jim Ratcliffe completed his minority investment in the club.
The INEOS founder purchased a 27.7% stake worth around £1.3 billion before later increasing his shareholding through an additional £79.2 million investment, taking his total ownership to 28.9 per cent.
As part of that agreement, Ratcliffe was handed control of football operations at Old Trafford and has overseen significant changes across the sporting structure.
With United back among the Premier League’s top teams and Champions League football returning next season, any future ownership developments could have a major impact on the club’s next chapter.
