FIGC President Gabriele Gravina insists Claudio Ranieri did not turn down the Italy job: ‘It was a mutual decision.’

FIGC President Gravina clarifies that Roma advisor Ranieri didn’t snub the Italy job, prompting the Azzurri to put Gennaro Gattuso under contract.

Gravina clarifies Ranieri Italy decision

“There was an idea, a meeting, with the utmost respect. We had worked on an alternative project before calling Ranieri,” Gravina said on Thursday, during Gattuso’s unveiling press conference.

“We were not unprepared. We spoke to Dan [Friedkin], the Roma owner, with whom I have an excellent relationship, also internationally, as he’s part of a UEFA commission that I preside over.

“It was a respectful chat, and I think there were no conditions to go beyond. It was a mutual decision. Discussing a refusal extends beyond the actual conditions of a contact, which I think is normal when decisions must be made.”

Ranieri stated in a June 10 press release that he would not coach the Italy national team in order to remain “committed” to Roma.

New Ranieri role at Roma

The 73-year-old has become an advisor to Roma owner Dan Friedkin, providing crucial input in the appointment of ex-Atalanta boss Gian Piero Gasperini as the Giallorossi’s new head coach.

Gravina replied to more questions from reporters, including, clearly, why the Azzurri picked Gattuso to replace Luciano Spalletti.

Lastly, the FIGC President confirmed the launch of a new project, overseen by former Italy coach Cesare Prandelli, joined by World Cup winners Gianluca Zambrotta and Simone Perrotta, aiming to develop young players at Coverciano.
