  • Captain reported for camp as normal
  • Trained inside on Wednesday
  • Major doubt for tomorrow’s game

Today, Wednesday 8th of October, marks the first day of the second international break of the season. African qualifiers and Asian play-off games are set to take place throughout the day.

Then, tomorrow — the European games will begin — with friendlies and qualifiers set to take place. One of the perhaps more exciting friendlies will be England’s clash with neighbours Wales at Wembley Stadium.

Although it is hard to be overly motivated by non competitive games, there is always an edge when two British teams play each other, and it is one where both teams will really not want to lose the game.

England will no doubt be the clear favourites to win the game, but the task has got harder. As per Sky Sports, Harry Kane is a ‘major doubt’, and trained inside on Wednesday.

The striker had gone off after taking a hit to his ankle in Bayern Munich’s win over Eintracht Frankfurt at the weekend, but said he felt okay, and that in a few days it would be fine to the media after the game.

Perhaps the recovery has not been quite as smooth as he would have hoped, but overall this doesn’t feel too out of line with the plan, and it generally doesn’t feel like there is too much to worry about.

Most people were hoping he would be rested for the friendly with Wales regardless, with Ollie Watkins given the opportunity to lead the line instead. If Thomas Tuchel was considering starting Kane, you’d like to hope this would make sure he does not.

With the World Cup qualifier against Latvia not until Tuesday, you would like to think that the captain will have fully recovered and will be good to go by then.

This game could be the first game of the Tuchel era without Kane in the starting XI, having started all six games so far. The two clearly enjoy a great relationship all the way back from their time together at Bayern Munich.

Earlier on this break, Tuchel heaped praise on his skipper, saying he was “undoubtedly the best striker of his generation”, and just how happy he is to work with him again.

Despite not winning any silverware together, Kane had a sublime individual record under the German manager at Bayern, scoring 44 goals and providing 12 assists in 45 games under his leadership — winning his first ever European golden boot in the process.

It is clear that Tuchel was never going to buy into the nonsense shouts that England have moved past Kane and should plan for the future without him. Fortunately, he is a much smarter man and manager than that.

We can be confident that Kane will start pretty much every game when fit — let’s hope that will be the case against Latvia on Tuesday evening.
