Manchester United continue to dominate headlines on and off the pitch, with the club’s key figures frequently in the spotlight for reasons that extend beyond football.
Under Ruben Amorim, the Red Devils are enjoying a renewed sense of direction, but the squad remains filled with personalities whose stories stretch well past the touchline.
From contract discussions and international call-ups to behind-the-scenes revelations, every detail surrounding United’s players tends to capture fan attention.
This week, one such revelation has amused supporters worldwide, and it involves one of United’s longest-serving defenders.
Harry Maguire, known across the globe for his commanding performances for Manchester United and England, has revealed that “Harry” is not actually his first name.
The 32-year-old centre-back, who has become one of the most recognisable figures in English football, was in fact born Jacob Harry Maguire.
Harry Maguire explained the backstory in an interview with TNT Sports, saying, “My mum decided to call me Jacob Harry [Maguire] when I was born.
“Then after three months people started calling me Jakey.
“She didn’t like it so she swapped it around to Harry Jacob [Maguire].
“But she couldn’t change it by passport until I was 18.
“As soon as I was 18 I changed it around, so it’s actually officially Harry Jacob now.”
The revelation has sparked curiosity among fans, many of whom have followed Maguire’s journey from Sheffield United to Leicester City and then to Old Trafford, where he joined in 2019.
He went on to captain United until Bruno Fernandes took over.
Interestingly, Maguire isn’t the only England international with a name twist.
Current England No.1 Jordan Pickford was originally named Pigford before his father changed the surname to spare him teasing as a youngster.
Meanwhile, former Manchester City goalkeeper Joe Hart, who won 75 caps for England, was born Charles Joseph John Hart, opting to go by “Joe” to distinguish himself from his father.
Maguire is also hoping to get a contract extension at United but such talks have reportedly not begun yet.
Maguire’s admission, though light-hearted, has once again highlighted his down-to-earth personality, something Manchester United fans have long admired, even amid the scrutiny he often faces.
For now, whether it’s Jacob or Harry, the United faithful will simply be hoping he keeps delivering strong performances where it matters most, on the pitch.
