Manchester United’s summer is looking set to continue their rebuild on the success of last summer.
Michael Carrick wants a left-winger to rotate with Matheus Cunha, giving his front line further depth ahead of the new season.
He also wants to rebuild a midfield that is losing Casemiro and could yet lose Manuel Ugarte too, with as many as three new bodies required through the middle.
However, The Red Devils aren’t set to be done there as they also want a left-back, with Luke Shaw no longer a man to be relied upon week to week and Tyrell Malacia already gone.
It is a long list, and the names attached to it are just as eye-catching, Sandro Tonali, Lewis Hall, Rafael Leao, and a rotating cast of midfield and wide options that seems to grow by the week.
The market does not wait, though, and neither do United. Long before the window formally opens, the club have already got one important piece of business over the line.
The deal is done, the contract is signed, and the man in question has already started work at Old Trafford.
Taking to LinkedIn, Harvey Busby has confimed that he has joined Manchester United as their new Lead National Scout for the academy.
As such, Busny will be covering the Under-14 to Under-18 age groups, as he was headhunted from Newcastle to take up one of the most important behind-the-scenes roles in the academy.
The recruitment that defines United’s summer, in other words, is not happening only on the pitch.
The vacancy opened at Carrington after Connor Hunter, who previously held the Under-14 to Under-18 national scout brief, was promoted internally to head of academy recruitment.
Harvey Busby was identified as the standout candidate to step into Hunter’s old role, and the two will now work side by side, Hunter shaping the wider strategy, Busby charged with finding and persuading the best young talent in the country to choose United.
That is the work that built his reputation on Tyneside.
During his time at Newcastle, Busby played a key part in an academy recruitment operation that repeatedly beat rival clubs to promising prospects.
For United, this is precisely that ability to win the race for a teenager’s signature that United have moved to secure. Announcing the move himself, he said he was delighted to join and looking forward to contributing to the academy and the talent pathway through the club.
