Liverpool might have just handed Chelsea a boost to hire Xabi Alonso as their permanent manager next season. The Blues have gone through a tumultuous season, starting with the sacking of Enzo Maresca, followed by the disastrous appointment of Liam Rosenior.
A long winless streak meant that Rosenior was sacked as well in April, leading to the appointment of Calum McFarlane as the interim boss for the second time (previously earlier this year when Maresca was sacked).
With several names lined up for the permanent head coach role next season, it now looks like Xabi Alonso might be one of the favorites to take up the role.
There was a time in February and March when it looked like Liverpool might drop out of the Champions League qualification spots. However, a decent run of form and poor performance from immediate rivals like Aston Villa, Chelsea meant that the Reds need only 5 more points to seal their spot in Europe’s elite competition.
And qualifying for the UCL might have reduced the pressure on under-fire boss Arne Slot, as reports from Sky Sports last month have stated that the Dutchman might carry on as their manager due to this.
And now, Jamie Carragher has reiterated the same on MNF:
“…the noises I am hearing is Slot will be the Liverpool manager next season if they can secure Champions League qualification, which they look like doing right now.”
While Xabi Alonso was touted to be Liverpool’s next manager (following his sacking at Real Madrid), this probably means that other clubs targeting the Spaniard have now gotten a boost. At the forefront of those clubs is Chelsea, who could now attempt to lure the former Reds star.
