Former Manchester United defender Phil Jones feels that Ruben Amorim will stick to his guns tactically

Manchester United have been embroiled in uneven results since the start of the season. The direction of the team was unclear in many matches, while some embarrassing defeats added to the pressure. The defeat against a lower division team like Grimsby Town in the Carabao Cup made supporters and the media even more restless. Amidst these results, the discussion intensified as to how far Ruben Amorim will be able to take this project.

There is also a state of doubt within the board, and questions are being raised whether the recent victory against Burnley is just a temporary relief or is it the beginning of a permanent improvement. Earlier, Amorim himself had indicated that things are not going according to his thinking, and he may consider leaving this post. These statements had made the atmosphere more tense.

Phil Jones’ opinion and the aspect of transparency:

Meanwhile, former Manchester United defender Phil Jones has made his opinion clear on the 40-year-old manager. Jones said that one of Amorim’s qualities is his transparency, which has been missing from United in the last few years. He explained that if a manager is honest with the supporters, it can change the atmosphere of the club. Jones liked the fact that Amorim had clearly said from the beginning that things would get worse at first, then gradually get better. This honesty sets him apart from other former managers.

He also believed that Amorim does not run away from his criticism, but accepts it and stands by his decisions. The former United defender underlined that this relationship between players and fans can only be built when the coach puts forward his reality without hiding it. This quality is important in a big club like United, because here questions are raised at every step and the expectations of the supporters never decrease.

“I’ll tell you where I’m at with Amorim… I like him. I like the transparency he has between the players and the fans – and I think that’s certainly been something we’ve missed over the last few years.

“I think certain previous managers have missed a trick, because if you’re transparent with this fanbase, they will back you all the way; they will sing your name and cheer for you. Look, he came in straight away and said things were going to get worse before they got better, and that’s been the case. I like his authenticity; he is who he is, and he’ll face criticism for it, but he’s not going to change for anyone. He owns it.”

What should be Amorim’s strategy going forward?

Now the biggest question is whether Amorim will change his strategy or stick to the same 3-4-2-1 system. An analytical report from the BBC have argued that Amorim’s system makes the team too predictable. Particularly in a tough environment like the Premier League, wingbacks pushing forward can create gaps in midfield, and the team loses width. The Carabao Cup defeat to Grimsby Town highlighted this weakness, with a hugely-priced squad failing to breach a defensive wall.

On the other hand, the Guardian says some players believe the system can function. They believe the problem is not just tactics, but player instability and long-standing dysfunction at the club. Amorim’s record at Sporting CP shows that, given the right combination of timing and players, his approach can be successful.

The INEOS leadership have so far signalled their support for Amorim, but whatever comfort the Burnley win may have provided, the board’s uncertainty has not been fully assuaged. This season will be decisive for them. If results don’t improve in the coming months, Amorim’s project could be incomplete. We believe Amorim deserves more time. His candour and long-term vision fit the culture at this club, but only time will tell if this belief will bear fruit or remain just expectations.
