Tottenham Hotspur have struggled at the back throughout the season. Numerous injuries to key defenders have not helped Ange Postecoglou’s cause and the Lilywhites have thrown away a lot of positive results because of that. The Australian tactician has also been forced to play inexperienced players at the back and the lack of quality in the backline has affected the performances on the pitch.
There is a clear need for defensive reinforcements in the summer if Spurs want to close the gap on their rivals next season. At one point, Ange Postecoglou had all the first-choice defenders on the side-lines at the same time. Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven were injured midway through the season after enduring long-term injuries, and backup centre-back Radu Dragusin also ruptured his ACL earlier this year to make matters worse.
Ange Postecoglou was forced to play Archie Gray at the heart of the defence and the difference in quality was clear to see. Due to the injury crisis at the club, the Lilywhites managed to keep only six clean sheets in the Premier League this season. However, it is fair to say that the North London club exceeded expectations in Europe and managed to keep three clean sheets in the knockout stages of the competition.
There is no surprise that Daniel Levy is looking to bring in a new defender in the summer. With Cristian Romero linked with a move away from the club, Levy believes that a replacement is needed to fill the defensive void left behind by the Argentina international.
It was reported earlier that Spurs are interested in signing Crystal Palace star Marc Guehi and they view him as the ideal replacement of Romero. Now, Spurs are backed to complete the signing by ex-scout Mick Brown as well. Speaking to the Football Insider, Brown said,
“They’ve got a certain instability at centre-back and it’s an issue they want to deal with. They see Van de Ven as their top option in that position, but from what I hear they’re not quite so sure about Romero, and he could be leaving. Guehi doesn’t have those same question marks about his performances.”
The ex-Spurs scout added,
“He’s ultra-consistent, you could put your bank balance on him giving you a good display every week. That’s the exact type of thing Tottenham are looking for, a consistent and calming presence at the back, and he’s got the experience and leadership skills to go with that.”
Mick Brown suggests that Tottenham need to bring in a new defender in the summer as Romero is about to leave the club. The ex-Spurs scout urges the Lilywhites to sign Marc Guehi as the Englishman is consistent and performs well week in week out. Brown also acknowledges that a player of Geuhi’s calibre is exactly what Spurs need as he has Premier League experience, and he is also a natural leader at the back.
Daniel Levy must act quick if he wants to land the Crystal Palace captain in the summer. The 24-year-old is also being targeted by Liverpool and Newcastle United as both clubs look to bolster their defence heading into next season. Signing Guehi would be a step in the right direction as he would fit in perfectly at N17 and fill the defensive void left behind by Romero as well.
