Homegrown USMNT star earns big European transfer

Wiley's transfer, reportedly in the range of $11M, should give him the opportunity to develop within some of Europe's biggest leagues. While his contract is signed with Chelsea, he is expected to be loaned out to Strasbourg in France's Ligue 1. Strasbourg and Chelsea fall under the same ownership group and are able to exchange players more freely than their peers.

"Caleb [Wiley] epitomizes the pathway that we envisioned when we started this club," said Atlanta technical director Carlos Bocanegra in a statement. "Born and raised in Atlanta, he joined our academy at 11 years old, played for ATL UTD 2 [Atlanta's second division squad] and went on to earn every step in his path up to signing as a homegrown."

Bocanegra isn't lying. For many clubs across the world, losing a prospect like Wiley would be cause for consternation. But for Atlanta United, it's cause for celebration instead. The club has prided itself on youth development since its debut season in 2017 and loves to prepare young players for overseas opportunities. 

Paraguayan midfielder Miguel Almiron is a great example. He followed a similar path to Wiley by joining Atlanta as a young player and moving to Newcastle United in the Premier League at the age of 25. He went on to become one of Newcastle's most valuable players and is beloved by English fans.

Wiley's European transfer is just another one of many wins for Atlanta's development program. It proves that MLS isn't just a 'retirement' league where legends come to see out their careers. It's a place for the discovery and growth of new legends, too.

Wiley has one big job before his move to Europe. He'll compete for Team USA at the 2024 Paris Olympics, joining the New York Red Bulls' John Tolkin and FC Cincinnati's Miles Robinson as a key part of the squad's defense.

Wiley and Team USA will begin their hunt for an Olympic soccer medal against home nation France on Wednesday.
