The current World Cup holders are Argentina, who won the 2022 World Cup Final over France in Qatar on December 18, 2022.

Many football fans will remember the 2022 World Cup Final due to the multiple moments the game brought and the scenes of Lionel Messi lifting the trophy he had been after throughout his career.

Messi is considered by many to be the greatest player in football history, but his lack of trophies with the Argentine national team was heavily criticized by fans from Argentina and from other fan bases.

Messi scored two goals against France in the final, which finished in a 3-3 draw after extra time, and he scored his penalty kick in the penalty shootout, where Argentina won 4-2.

It was Messi's first World Cup trophy with Argentina after playing four World Cups before the 2022 World Cup. Messi's first World Cup with Argentina was in 2006, and the closest he got to winning a World Cup before 2022 was in 2014.

Lionel Messi's World Cup Stats

Lionel Messi played a total of 26 World Cup games with Argentina across five different World Cup tournaments. Messi scored a total of 13 goals and is among the players with the most goals in World Cups.

Lionel Messi in the 2014 World Cup

In the 2006 World Cup, Messi was 18 years old and only played three matches for Argentina. In the 2010 World Cup, Messi did not score a goal for Argentina, but played in all five matches, where they reached the quarterfinals.

In the 2014 World Cup, Messi gave the Argentina fans joy as he played his best World Cup at the time and helped his national team reach a World Cup final for the first time since 1990.

Messi scored four goals for Argentina in the 2014 World Cup, where he became the tournament's best player by winning the Golden Ball. Unfortunately for him, Messi and Argentina lost 1-0 to Germany in the 2014 World Cup Final.

The 2014 World Cup Final loss seemed to have an impact on the Argentina national team, as what followed was two Copa America Final losses to Chile, in 2015 and 2016, and a Round of 16 exit in the 2018 World Cup.

These "failures" sparked big concerns from Argentina fans, who started questioning whether Messi can guide Argentina to success and trophies.

Messi scored a crucial goal that led to Argentina winning 2-0 and getting back on track to get out of the group. Argentina defeated Poland 2-0 and were through to the knockout stage, where Messi would shine.

Argentina would get past Australia, the Netherlands, and Croatia to reach the World Cup Final again; Messi scored in each game en route to the final.

Messi scored a brace in the World Cup Final against France, but the match needed a penalty shootout to decide a winner after the match ended 3-3 after extra time. In the penalty shootout, Argentina won the final 4-2, with Messi scoring the first penalty for Argentina.
