Big spending is nothing new in European football. Top clubs throw hundreds of millions at their managers to give them the best chance of winning trophies. As the 2025/26 season starts across Europe, managerial pressure to win is as intense as it's ever been.
Transfermarkt has looked into which managers have spent the most money since winning their last major trophy. Here are the Top 5 managers who spent the most since their last trophy:
Niko Kovač has spent €407 million since winning the DFB-Pokal with Bayern Munich on 25 May 2019. Since then he has managed AS Monaco, VfL Wolfsburg, as of February 2025 Borussia Dortmund.
His experience in management shows how there is constant pressure on managers at the top clubs, as success is reduced to trophies.
Pep Guardiola has spent €392 million since his last major trophy in 2023 with Manchester City. Despite having recently won trophies, Guardiola will need financial muscle to remain at the top of the Premier League and continue to compete in the Champions League.
His last major trophy was the FIFA Club World Cup on 22 December 2023.
At Atlético Madrid, Diego Simeone has spent €407 million since his last big trophy. To compete at the very top in LaLiga and Europe, shows that even managers with experience must spend heavily to remain competitive.
Simeone’s last major trophy was the UEFA Europa League on 16 May 2018.
Second is Unai Emery, who has spent €430 million since winning the Europa League with Villarreal in 2021, managing both Villarreal and Aston Villa.
His spending shows he is trying to compete with the big boys. Unai Emery's last major trophy was the Europa League, on 26 May 2021.

Top of the list is Mikel Arteta. Since Arsenal’s FA Cup win in 2019/20, he has spent €778 million on transfers alone. When you add in the club’s total support (including current player values, retained stars and other investments) Arsenal’s backing is over €1.02 billion.
Arsenal have the third most expensive squad in the world (€1.32 billion) and the most expensive starting XI in the Premier League. He has the tools to be successful, but the pressure is extreme. His last major trophy was FA Cup on 1 August 2020.
