Tottenham forward Dominic Solanke has not endured a good start to the new season under Thomas Frank. The England international has lost his place in the starting eleven to Richarlison this season. And it is fair to say that the 27-year-old is not looking likely to regain his spot up front for the Lilywhites anytime soon.
The Spurs No.19 was recovering from an injury during Spurs’ pre-season tour to Hong-king and South Korea. And that is where Richarlison impressed Thomas Frank with his performances, eventually becoming the first-choice striker for the North London club. This has proved to be a setback for Solanke as the ex-Bournemouth star is not getting the minutes he wants this season.
The 27-year-old endured a ‘stop-start’ first campaign for the Lilywhites as well. He also admitted that found life tough during the initial months at N17, before getting used to the scrutiny that comes with playing for a big club. However, Solanke did manage to turn it around in the second half of the season by playing a crucial role in helping Spurs win the Europa League in May.
Tottenham fans will be happy to know that Richarlison has started showing his true potential under Thomas Frank. However, the Brazilian’s redemption arc is proving to be a major factor for Dominic Solanke not getting regular minutes this season. And that is a concern for the 27-year-old as he has now missed out on the national team call-up due to lack of minutes under his belt.
However, Thomas Frank backs Solanke to get back to his best as the season progresses. Speaking in his pre-match presser (via Hayters TV), Frank said,
“I think Dom is a very good striker. I think Dominic has been, in my opinion, good for Tottenham. I know he had the injury and then had to come back and maybe he didn’t show his highest level in the end of last season, but I think they are two good strikers.”
The Spurs manager added,
“And we need two good strikers. I think the World Cup is very far away right now, I think he knows that he’s a good striker, he knows that I like him. He knows there’s competition.”
Thomas Frank believes Dominic Solanke is a ‘good’ striker, who has not been able to showcase his true potential due to the injury setback he suffered at the end of last season. The Spurs manager indicated that there is still a long time to go for the World Cup, and Solanke has enough time to turn it around and get back in contention for the England national team call-up.
The 27-year-old will look to take his chances as they come for the time being. He would have to make an impact from the bench under Thomas Frank to earn his spot in the starting eleven. Also, the England international will hope that he can take his chances as soon as Richarlison’s form drops this season.
