Tottenham not signing Eberechi Eze might just have worked out for the better in hindsight

Tottenham managed to make a mess of themselves this month after facing a public embarrassment in the transfer window. As we all know, the Lilywhites were in the hunt for a new left-winger and a #10 after the departure of Heung-Min Son and the untimely injury to James Maddison respectively. However, for one reason or the other, the North London club was finding it tough to land a replacement quickly.

Daniel Levy and Co. had identified Crystal Palace star Eberechi Eze as a potential replacement of Heung-Min Son. The England international was keen on the move to N17 as well, after agreeing personal terms with Spurs. But the Lilywhites had still not managed to reach an agreement with the Eagles over the transfer fee due to Levy’s incompetence.

This gave Arsenal an opportunity to swoop in at the eleventh-hour and sign the 27-year-old immediately. The Gunners were quick to sort out the financial details for Eze’s signature, and the player instantly agreed to move to the Emirates Stadium instead. However, Daniel Levy did manage to save face eventually by landing Xavi Simons from RB Leipzig on a long-term deal.

Could Tottenham have done more to land Eberechi Eze?

Well, there will always be a lingering question in the minds of Tottenham fans about missing out on Eberechi Eze. The Lilywhites were on the cusp of signing the England international, and still managed to somehow lose him to their arch rivals in a matter of hours. Now fans will hope that losing out on the 27-year-old does not come back to haunt them in the near future.

But ex-Spurs player Paul Robinson does not believe Daniel Levy is to be blamed for missing out on Eze. Speaking to Tottenham News, Robinson said,

“If Arsenal were interested, I don’t think Tottenham were ever in the race. In all honesty, the media and the press, the speculation around it, if Arsenal had been interested for the same amount as reported that Tottenham have, I think there was only going to be one winner because of his background and who he supported as a kid.”

The ex-player added,

“I think that there’s been a lot made of it because it was Arsenal. But I think if Arsenal weren’t in the race to sign him, Tottenham would have got the player over the line.”

Paul Robinson believes Tottenham stood no chance of signing Eberechi Eze in the summer if Arsenal were also interested in landing him from the start. The ex-player adds that Eze’s decision to join the Gunners was also based on the fact that he has always been an Arsenal fan, and he was ‘meant’ to go play for them. But Robinson also believes that Spurs would have landed the England international if Arsenal were not in the race to lure him to the Emirates Stadium.

Well, missing out on Eze might just be a blessing in disguise for the Lilywhites as they signed Xavi Simons on a much cheaper deal instead. The Dutchman also has immense potential and he is still just 22-years-old. Not only that, but Simons has already played for some of the biggest teams in Europe, and he might just be what the North London club needs to get back on top.
