Inter Miami confirms Tata Martino as new head coach

After heavy speculation , Inter Miami has confirmed that Argentine coach Tata Martino will join the club this summer.

Martino coached future Miami players Lionel Messi and Sergio Busquets at Barcelona in 2013. He also led Argentina to the World Cup Final in 2014 and won an MLS Cup with Atlanta United in 2018.

"I'm very excited to join a big club like Inter Miami and I know together we can accomplish many great things," Martino told the press. "The club has the necessary infrastructure to be a major competitor in the region and I believe that with everyone's hard work and commitment, we can get there."

Martino has lots of work ahead of him to make Miami competitive. The team is last in the MLS Eastern Conference and has the worst goal difference in its division.

And while big-name signings like Messi and Busquets should help Miami improve, history shows that they're not an immediate fix. The LA Galaxy won just two of its six games after Zlatan Ibrahimovic arrived in March 2018 and just one game in eight after David Beckham joined in July 2007.

Still, many in Miami believe the combination of Messi's brilliance and Martino's technical knowledge will make an immediate impact.

"Tata [Martino] has a proven track record of success in this league and on several other major stages of soccer," Inter Miami sporting director Chris Henderson said. "He knows what it takes to win in MLS and we're confident that's what he'll bring to Inter Miami."
