The MLS primary transfer window closes on Wednesday, but Inter Miami CF is reportedly expected to be a major player in the final hours.
Once the transfer deadline passes, teams in the American soccer league will not have a chance to add players from other teams to their rosters until the secondary transfer window opens on July 24.
Inter Miami has matches in league play, the CONCACAF Champions Cup and the Club World Cup before then — plus two FIFA international breaks its players will participate in for their national teams.
Star forward Lionel Messi, 37, will not be able to play every game, so the Herons have been linked with major splash signings amid an undefeated 5-0-3 start to the MLS campaign. Players tabbed to bolster the forward line include Belgium international Kevin De Bruyne and Argentina international Angel Di Maria.
While that type of incoming transfer would require finding some roster loopholes, Inter Miami's expected path to becoming a big player at the transfer deadline on Wednesday is much more straightforward.
According to MLS insider Tom Bogert , the 2024 MLS Supporters' Shield winners are fielding trade offers for the biggest name in the league who is both available and expected to move at the deadline: Julian Gressel.
The German defender has played in MLS since 2017, when he was named MLS Rookie of the Year. Gressel boasts championship experience, winning the MLS Cup with Atlanta United in 2018 and with Columbus Crew in 2023.
Gressel is "overwhelmingly likely to be traded," Bogert said.
Sources told GiveMeSport that numerous clubs are in discussions with Inter Miami, with a deal expected to go through by Wednesday night.
While it could free up a roster spot for Inter Miami to theoretically add another player, time is running short. The Herons signed loan deals for midfielder Baltasar Rodríguez and forward Allen Obando in March. Gressel would be the first outgoing player since the departure of midfielder Facundo Farías on Jan. 31.
