Inter Miami CF defeated the Vancouver Whitecaps 3-1 on Saturday, December 6, at Chase Stadium to be crowned MLS Cup champion for the first time since its founding. Following the game, the club made an announcement on Luis Suarez.
Suarez, 38, will see his contract with the Herons conclude at the end of 2025, but unlike his teammates Jordi Alba and Sergio Busquets, the Uruguayan has not announced whether he will retire from professional soccer or continue playing.
This is why his future is in doubt. Inter Miami co-owner Jorge Mas spoke with the press on the matter and noted that if it were up to the club, Suarez would continue with the Florida franchise.

“If Luis decides to play another year, I would love to see Luis continue.

"If Luis decides to stay with the club for another year, that would be fine; I would love to see Luis continue. Obviously, then the conversations turn to how Luis Suarez would return (budget/salary), but that is not something the coach would determine… the decision will be Luis's," Mas said.
In the final stretch of the season, Javier Mascherano decided to give the starting role to young forward Mateo Silvetti, leaving Suarez on the bench on more than one occasion.
At 38, the Uruguayan no longer has the explosiveness or speed he once had, but his quality remains intact, as he demonstrated this season with his numbers.
In the recently concluded campaign, Suarez recorded 17 goals and 17 assists in 50 games, considering MLS, Leagues Cup, FIFA Club World Cup, and Concacaf Champions Cup.
If he continues for another year at Inter Miami, it is most likely that he would do so, accepting a salary reduction and a secondary role, allowing Mascherano to begin laying the foundations for the club's future with young players like Silvetti, 19.
Messi, 38, for his part, is under contract until 2028, so the Argentine star will surely continue to be the cornerstone of the Florida club's project.
