Inter Miami has decided to restrict Lionel Messi’s personal bodyguard, Yassine Cheuko, from patrolling the sidelines during matches, a move that has reportedly left him frustrated.
Cheuko has been a familiar presence near Messi, swiftly responding to security concerns since the Argentine superstar joined Major League Soccer (MLS) in 2023.
Speaking about the decision, Cheuko highlighted the growing number of pitch invasions since Messi’s arrival in the US, emphasizing the security challenges.
"I came to the USA and in just 20 months, 16 people have already done so,” told Spanish media, according to Reuters. “There's a huge problem here. I'm not the problem. Let me help Messi.”
Inter Miami clarified to ESPN that the decision to remove Cheuko from the field was made by the club itself, not MLS. While he remains part of the team’s security detail, his role will now be limited to areas such as the locker room and mixed zones.
Meanwhile, the league reportedly maintains its existing security protocols, with designated personnel near the benches at all games.
Cheuko, a former MMA fighter, gained recognition for his rapid response to pitch invaders, with viral social media clips showcasing his vigilance, per The Athletic. His presence became a key component of Messi’s personal security, ensuring quick intervention whenever fans breached the field.
The move has reportedly disappointed Messi, who has relied on Cheuko for protection amid increasing fan enthusiasm.
The Athletic’s source from within the club indicated that both Messi and Cheuko were upset over the decision, although Inter Miami has not publicly commented on Messi’s stance.
With Messi continuing to attract massive attention in MLS, the club’s ability to manage security effectively will be closely watched.
