According to Fabrizio Biasin, Inter Milan rejected Max Allegri to appoint Cristian Chivu as coach this summer.
Biasin recounted the backstory of Inter’s search for a coach to replace Simone Inzaghi this summer on Italian broadcaster TeleLombardia, via FCInter1908.
Inter Milan spent the start of this summer in search of a new coach.
Simone Inzaghi left the Nerazzurri immediately after the Champions League final, in which the team lost in a record-breaking 5-0 scoreline against Paris Saint-Germain. He departed after four years.
Inzaghi had decided to accept the big money offer from Al-Hilal rather than prioritizing continuing to compete for trophies in Europe.
This left Inter scrambling to find a coach to replace the 49-year-old.
There were a few names linked. Reportedly, Inter were pursuing Como coach Cesc Fabregas. Meanwhile, former Nerazzurri and Arsenal midfielder and current Genoa coach Patrick Vieira was also reportedly on the shortlist.
Eventually, it was Cristian Chivu who Inter turned to. The Romanian had spent six season as an Inter player and several more years coaching at youth team level with the Nerazzurri.
Chivu had then spent the second half of last season coaching Parma, who he guided out of the relegation zone.
According to Italian journalist Fabrizio Biasin, however, Inter were offered the chance to sign a much more well-known name in the summer.
“Before choosing Chivu of Fabregas,” he said, “there was a possibility to sign Allegri.”
“It’s not like Inter didn’t have that option. However, they didn’t take it up.”
“Not because they don’t rate him,” the Italian journalist continued. “Everyone knows what a good coach he is.”
“But rather, because Marotta, Ausilio, and the owners wanted someone fresh and young.”
“With a fresh take on football,” Biasin explained.
Allegri would then go on the join Inter’s city rivals AC Milan. Biasin explained that “when Tare approached Allegri, his agent called and said that he had an offer from Milan.”
“He asked if he should wait,” the journalist added. “But Marotta replied: ‘Go ahead.'”
