The transfer window always has its way of throwing up some of the funniest transfer links of all time. Yet, that is the way that the window plays out, especially in today’s age of media, where there is a constant need for sensationalism.
There are some divides in club football that players generally don’t cross. Even if players are willing to, on the rare occasions, the clubs don’t necessarily conduct transfers between one and another. Tottenham and Arsenal are two such clubs.
The North London club rivalry is one of the most intense in European club football. Red and White might mix on a palette to make Pink, but not in England, where there is no love lost between the two clubs.
Thus, it is almost always baffling to see a Tottenham player being linked with an Arsenal move or vice versa. Now, ex-goalkeeper and pundit Paul Robinson has ridiculed links of Gabriel Jesus potentially joining the Lilywhites.
As quoted by Football Insider, here is what he had to say:
“No, not at all – I can’t see that at all, who’s linked him with that? At 28 years old, I think Gabriel Jesus can still do a job – and Tottenham need somebody who can play as a number nine. [But] they won’t sign a player from Arsenal – deals between those two clubs are very, very rarely done. I wouldn’t be surprised if he did move on this season, but now they’ve got Gyokeres, he’s going to play. He’s going to be the number nine, and with Havertz they’ve got cover in that position.”
“I wouldn’t be surprised if Jesus moves, but I think it’s kite-flying journalism to link him with Tottenham. Tottenham need direct cover, somebody else who can play as a nine instead of Dominic Solanke if squad rotation’s going to be a thing next season. They need strength in depth, as was proved last year. But Gabriel Jesus? that one’s not happening I’m afraid.”
It is one thing for Tottenham to be linked with an Arsenal player, but Gabriel Jesus, really? The Brazilian has hardly featured for the Gunners in recent times, with Mikel Arteta preferring Kai Havertz for the number nine position even when he was fit.

Tottenham also don’t need a player like Jesus in their ranks. The ex-Manchester City man is a very inconsistent goalscorer and his best attribute is his ability to work his socks off, when the team is out of possession.
That is not the kind of attacker Spurs need, even if Jesus was at some other club. The fact that he plays at the Emirates only makes it a bigger veto.
Ultimately, this is one of the many transfer rumours that don’t make much sense, from whichever angle you look at it. It’s time to get serious and focus on transfers that actually have a chance of happening.
