Questions around Arne Slot’s position as Liverpool manager have surfaced once again following a 4-1 defeat to PSV.

Reports suggested that the club remained behind Slot despite a 3-0 home loss to Nottingham Forest.

However, Liverpool’s form did not get any better recently. The defending Premier League champions have now lost nine of their last 12 matches, matching their worst stretch since the 1953/54 season.

Following calls from fans for Slot’s replacement, former centre-back Jamie Carragher has now offered his opinion on the situation.

During his appearance on CBS Sports after the game, Carragher explained why he is still not calling for a change in manager.

He did not hold back on his criticism of the players, who he felt had let down their coach.

“I couldn’t believe at the weekend that people were talking about the manager’s job, when I spoke to Liverpool supporters after losing at home to Nottingham Forest.

“It’s only going to amplify now and I’ve always been in the camp of you stick with the manager because I’m angry with the players if I’m being totally honest. I’m really angry with the players but it does get to a stage with any manager, at any club, I always use this word, untenable.

“It almost feels like it can’t go on any longer. I’m not quite there yet personally in terms of the manager, but I know a lot of supporters will be.”

Steve McManaman echoed those sentiments, while Danny Murphy believes this next stretch will be crucial for Slot’s future.

The situation between Arne Slot and Liverpool’s squad looks increasingly one-sided

Carragher has a point – plenty of Liverpool fans feel certain players have stopped playing for Slot.

In football, the unfortunate reality is that player power will prevail over the coach virtually every time.

Liverpool spent over £400m in last summer’s transfer window, and it seems unlikely FSG would move away from their investment so quickly.

The more likely outcome is that Slot will eventually be replaced – whether that is sooner or later down the line in 2025/26.
