JJ Gabriel requests to leave Manchester United

Manchester United have spent the last year carefully managing the rise of JJ Gabriel, one of the most exciting young talents to emerge from their academy in recent times.

The club have been determined to keep expectations under control while allowing the youngster to continue developing around players several years his senior.

However, in a major and unexpected development, 15-year-old JJ Gabriel has now told Manchester United that he wants to leave the club and has formally requested the cancellation of his registration with immediate effect, as reported by The Telegraph.

According to Tyrone Marshall on X, JJ Gabriel will miss Manchester United’s squad to face Brighton tomorrow after deciding not to train on Tuesday, despite initially being planned for involvement.

Gabriel has been with United since the age of 11 and is understood not to be preparing to immediately join another club, with his decision instead centred on wanting to bring his time at Old Trafford to an end.

The situation is particularly complicated because Gabriel does not turn 16 until October 6, meaning he cannot yet sign a scholarship agreement, while professional contracts cannot be signed until a player turns 17.

United can challenge the request, leaving the club with an important decision to make over one of the most highly rated prospects in their academy.

The timing will also be a major concern for the club, given Gabriel has only just started to gain even more attention after scoring a hat-trick in United’s 5-0 UEFA Youth League victory over Sabah.

That European performance came after what was already a remarkable 2025/26 season for the youngster.

JJ Gabriel scored 26 goals in 29 games across the U18 Premier League and FA Youth Cup competitions last season.

He finished the campaign with 30 total goal contributions

His performances were not limited to the league either, with Gabriel also making a significant contribution in cup competitions and helping United reach the FA Youth Cup final.

He can operate as a striker, left-sided forward or attacking midfielder, giving him the versatility that has made his rapid progression even more intriguing for the club.

Gabriel’s rise had already taken him into the senior environment, and he travelled with United during pre-season after being handed the No.77 shirt ahead of the 2026/27 season.

There was even growing excitement that he could eventually challenge to become United’s youngest-ever first-team player to play a competitive game, with Ryan Giggs among those to publicly praise his enormous potential.

Gabriel became the youngest senior United player when he featured against Atletico Madrid in pre-season.

For a club that has built so much of its identity around developing academy players, losing Gabriel would therefore represent a significant setback.

It also comes at an awkward moment for United’s ownership, with Sir Jim Ratcliffe and the Glazer family already facing increased scrutiny following the Manchester derby defeat and protests from supporters.

United now have to decide how strongly they are prepared to fight to keep a player they have invested in since he was 11.

For now, Gabriel’s future at Old Trafford is suddenly one of the biggest academy stories surrounding Manchester United, with the club facing a crucial decision over whether they can convince their teenage wonderkid to stay.
