Monday night may have marked a turning point in the managerial picture after Manchester United slipped to a damaging 2-1 defeat against Leeds United.

What once looked like a smooth path toward a permanent appointment has now become far more uncertain.

Despite the setback, United remain in a strong position to secure UEFA Champions League qualification, especially after Chelsea were beaten 3-0 by Manchester City.

A crucial clash at Stamford Bridge now looms, where a win could open up a 10-point gap and all but confirm a top-five finish that will now guarantee a place in the Champions League for next season.

However, behind the scenes, the bigger story is beginning to unfold, and it centres around Julian Nagelsmann.

United are now preparing to make a formal approach for the current Germany national team boss, with GIVEMESPORT reporting that contact is expected this month as the club reassesses its long-term direction.

Julian Nagelsmann is understood to be open to a return to club management after the World Cup and has long held ambitions of managing in the Premier League.

Tactically, the German coach could offer continuity, as he is well known for favouring a 4-2-3-1 system, a structure very similar to what Carrick has been implementing.

That alignment could prove crucial, as it would allow United’s current squad to transition smoothly without the kind of drastic tactical overhaul they experienced when moving from Erik ten Hag to Ruben Amorim.

Carrick, who had been viewed as the frontrunner to replace Ruben Amorim on a permanent basis, now finds himself under increasing pressure after the Leeds defeat.

While his overall run has been strong, this latest result has prompted United’s hierarchy to explore alternatives before committing to a final decision at the end of the season.

Nagelsmann is not the only name on the shortlist.

Luis Enrique remains a candidate, although his situation is complicated by ongoing discussions with Paris Saint-Germain over a potential contract extension.

United had also previously considered moves for Thomas Tuchel and Carlo Ancelotti, but both are now unavailable after committing to international roles with England national team and Brazil national team.

Another option, Roberto De Zerbi, had also been admired internally, but his recent move to Tottenham Hotspur has taken him out of contention.

All of this leaves United at a crossroads.

Carrick still has the opportunity to prove he is the right man by delivering Champions League football and finishing the season strongly, but the emergence of Nagelsmann as a serious target has undeniably changed the landscape.
