Juventus enquire about move for Eduardo Camavinga

Manchester United’s midfield rebuild appeared to be finished after a summer of significant investment in that area.

Michael Carrick has already welcomed Andrey Santos, Youri Tielemans and Carlos Baleba to Old Trafford since the window opened.

Bruno Fernandes and Kobbie Mainoo remain the established names either side of that new-look engine room.

Even with that depth, United’s interest in one further name has refused to go away in recent weeks.

Reports now suggest the Red Devils are preparing to submit a €50million bid for Real Madrid’s Eduardo Camavinga.

United have explored a move for the Frenchman throughout the summer amid growing uncertainty over his role at the Bernabeu.

Camavinga was offered to United through intermediaries earlier this month, with several other Premier League clubs also informed of his availability.

According to Tutto Mercato, Juventus, too, have held a long-standing interest, with them reporting that the Serie A giants have made an enquiry for the midfielder.

Camavinga’s situation in Spain has grown increasingly complicated since Xabi Alonso’s departure earlier this year.

Alonso had spent much of last season trying to find Camavinga a settled role, at one stage even deploying him as an emergency right-winger during a run of games when Real Madrid’s squad was stretched thin.

That experiment worked well enough in isolated moments, but it also underlined a wider problem, which was nobody at the club, Camavinga included, ever fully nailed down what his best position actually was.

Persistent injuries compounded the issue further, with the midfielder missing close to 60 matches across the last two seasons through a string of different fitness setbacks that repeatedly halted any momentum he built.

Where he had once looked like Real Madrid’s long-term successor to Casemiro in the deeper midfield role, Aurelien Tchouameni has since taken that job for himself, leaving Camavinga fighting for scraps of game time around him.

Mourinho’s arrival appears to have compounded matters further, with reports suggesting the Portuguese sees Camavinga more as squad cover than a guaranteed starter.

Real Madrid have set a €50million valuation on the 23-year-old, a figure that aligns closely with the fee United are reportedly preparing to offer.

His versatility, forged out of necessity during that difficult spell under Alonso, remains one of his most attractive qualities to potential suitors, with the ability to play across midfield as well as at left-back, which is another position United are looking at.

That flexibility could prove significant for United, who remain keen on strengthening their defensive options as well as their midfield before the deadline.
