La Liga club could move for €80m Tottenham defensive 'rock' if they secure key sale – Report

Tottenham Hotspur have a very talented squad, and one of their biggest coups of the summer transfer window so far has been their ability to keep the core intact. The Europa League win and the Champions League qualification have certainly helped in this regard.

Of course, club captain Son Heung-min is expected to leave this summer, as confirmed by himself. As difficult as it may be to see the 33-year-old leave, it is not necessarily a departure that would affect the club to its very core from a sporting perspective.

Apart from a few players like Sonny, the Tottenham squad is filled with talented youngsters who are either in the prime years of their career or even younger and yet to get there. This bodes very well for Thomas Frank as he attempts to build a new project.

Cristian Romero is one of the best players at Tottenham at the moment

Arguably, one of the best players to be playing for the North London club right now is Cristian Romero. The World Cup winner is a defensive “rock” when fit and he is one of the first names on the team sheet at Spurs.

Romero’s potential is sky high and he is also one of the captains at the club. There would be absolutely no surprise to see him inherit the armband full time once Son’s exit agreement is finalized and this underscores his importance to the club.

However, the Argentinian international’s future has come under scrutiny for quite some time now. Atletico Madrid in La Liga have been a club who have been heavily linked with signing Romero, with Diego Simeone a key driving factor to sign his compatriot.

Now, as per Spanish outlet Fichajes, the Spanish club could still move for Cristian Romero this summer should they manage to secure the exit of Conor Gallagher. Just a season after joining them, it looks like the Englishman has been placed on the transfer list.

A potential move could be dependent on a Gallagher sale

Interestingly, Gallagher is a player who has been linked with a move to Spurs this transfer window. Atletico intend to submit a €70m fixed price offer with €10m in add-ons to Tottenham for Romero’s services this summer.

The report mentions that the North London club have set an asking price of €80m for their club captain. However, one wonders, in today’s market where prices are inflated, if Tottenham would want more to sell a player with Romero’s quality.

Ultimately, it would be a surprise to see Cristian Romero leave Spurs in a season where they seem to be building something very special. The upcoming days should provide further clarity on the situation but it is expected that the South American defender would lead the club as they look to make a head start in the 2025/26 season.
