The Biancocelesti are enjoying a historic start to their campaign, smashing records and expectations alike. The team currently resides at the top of the Serie A table, as they share the same number of points (25) and goal difference (+15) with Inter Milan, who are considered the official leaders thanks to their superior number of goals (25 to 22).
Gennaro Gattuso’s men started their campaign with slim wins over Bologna, Genoa, and Udinese, before settling for a 2-2 draw against AC Milan. This was followed by an active five-match winning streak at the expense of Venezia, Monza, Juventus, Parma, and most recently Sassuolo, who were dismantled at home by six goals to two on Tuesday.
The Isolani began their campaign on a stellar note. In their first six Serie A fixtures, they registered four wins, including one over Maurizio Sarri’s Atalanta, while earning a draw against Juventus, with their only defeat coming against Inter Milan by a single goal.
However, Fabio Pisacane’s men lost the plot recently, especially after a shocking 0-4 defeat in Monza. This was followed by 0-2 loss at home to Bologna. On Tuesday, they fell short at the Olimpico despite a valiant effort against Roma, who escaped with a 4-2 victory. Therefore, Cagliari are currently on a three-man losing streak that dropped them to 10th place in the table.
Lazio (4-3-3): Mandas; Floriani Mussolini, Doekhi, Provstgaard, Tavares; Frattesi, Belahyane, Taylor; Isaksen, Noslin, Zaccagni.
Cagliari (4-3-2-1): Caprile; Ze Pedro, Mina, J. Rodriguez, Obert; Romano, Deiola, Adopo; Massolin, Maldini; Mendy.
With the league leaders who are riding a five-match winning streak host a team on a three-match skid, it would be almost foolish not to back the home side for a routine victory. Gattuso will warn you against undermining an opponent, and he is abolutely right about it, as he realises that his players can only extend their purple by pushing hard every single game.
While the lack of depth in attack and midfield could cause a physical drop in the second half, Lazio will be keen to impose their will from the get-go as the did at the Mapei and head to the interval with a healthy lead.
