Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano revealed that Liverpool could make multiple defensive signings with a strong interest in Bournemouth’s Milos Kerkez. Romano further highlighted that Liverpool are expected to sign a new centre-back during the summer amid a very busy window.
The Reds signed Federico Chiesa in a bargain deal as the only addition to their squad for the 2024-25 season. Many fans criticised the idea of letting Arne Slot succeed Jurgen Klopp without providing him with a healthy financial backing.
Nevertheless, Slot used the first season to assess the squad he inherited which possessed a lot of quality despite failures. Last season, Liverpool suffered a bad late dip in form, costing them numerous trophies at the very end.
The same has happened this season with the Reds recently suffering elimination from the Champions League and the Carabao Cup final loss. The lack of depth within the squad forced Slot to make less rotation which caused fatigue against Paris Saint-Germain.
Furthermore, many players have the qualities but suffer from the capability to maintain their consistency throughout the season. That issue has reoccurred for multiple seasons and despite the emotional bond with the fanbase that some of these players have, Liverpool needs to make a practical decision.
Speaking on his YouTube account, Romano revealed that Liverpool wants to make multiple defensive signings with an interest in Kerkez. He said:
“In the summer we expect Liverpool to be really busy. There are several positions to cover, at left-back they love Milos Kerkez (Bournemouth) who is in their list, they’re expected to bring in a new centre-back. let’s see what happens in the midfield.”
Liverpool’s left-back issue has persisted since last season when both Kostas Tsimikas and Andy Robertson struggled with injuries and inconsistencies. Robertson holds legendary status at Anfield and enjoys the adoration of the Kopites, but despite his leadership, the 31-year-old has struggled to maintain the performances he regularly delivered in his prime.
Meanwhile, Tsimikas has failed to impress Slot enough to usurp the current version of Robertson and changes are necessary now. While the Reds could keep the Scotland captain as a competition for the left-back spot, his starting status is uncertain.
Liverpool have maintained their interest in Kerkez, who has delivered fantastic performances for in-form Bournemouth this season. The 21-year-old has played a pivotal role for Bournemouth, featuring regularly as a combative and energetic left-back.
Current Liverpool sporting director Richard Hughes signed Kerkez during his tenure with the Cherries, along with several important stars. Hughes has faced constant criticism since he arrived at Liverpool due to the lack of transfer activity, embarrassment over the failed Martin Zubimendi saga and the current contract situation involving Virgil van Dijk, Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold.
However, the former Bournemouth director could help the Reds by signing Kerkez and solving the left-back situation. Liverpool got bullied by Paris Saint-Germain and Newcastle United’s superiority in athleticism within their squad. A player of Kerkez’s profile fits the requirement of the kind of players they need to negate that factor.
Slot has played the pairing of Ibrahima Konate and Virgil van Dijk regularly, using the other available options with caution. Jarell Quansah struggled during the early stages of the season but regained his confidence and form gradually.
However, the 22-year-old’s return to form is still short of the standards required at Liverpool to compete with the starters. Meanwhile, Joe Gomez suffered a hamstring injury in December and has remained unavailable until now which makes him unreliable.
Furthermore, Liverpool lacks a left-footed centre-back to compete with their captain Van Dijk and provide him a breather as rotation. Slot prefer players who can play in different variations under the same position according to the tactical requirements.
Liverpool needs to back the Dutch head coach accordingly and provide him with the players that he needs to remain consistent and competitive throughout the season. While Kerkez is a brilliant defensive option, there are many assessments that Liverpool needs to complete before finalising their targets.
