English soccer club West Bromwich Albion FC is reportedly "closing in" on appointing Loons head coach Eric Ramsay as their next manager, according to TalkSport's Alex Crook. Andy Greder of the Pioneer Press reported on Thursday that Ramsay is taking the West Brom job.
Ramsay, 34, was appointed as the second full-time head coach of Minnesota United in the spring of 2024. During his two years in charge, the Loons finished sixth (2024) and fourth (2025), respectively, in the Western Conference. They also advanced to the Western Conference semifinals in both seasons.
European clubs have been interested in Ramsay since last winter, including West Brom, before they hired Ryan Mason. Mason was fired last week with the club in 18th place in the English Championship, just seven points above relegation. French club Strasbourg FC had Ramsay as a finalist for its open managerial position before hiring Gary O'Neill earlier this week.
The timing of the move is poor for Minnesota, with players and staff reporting for preseason training camp this weekend. The Loons open the 2026 season on February 21 in Texas against Austin FC. Minnesota's home opener at Allianz Field in St. Paul is February 28 against FC Cincinnati.
In 2025, Minnesota set franchise records for most wins in a season (16), most points (58), and best goal differential (+17). The Loons were known under Ramsay for a defensive brand of soccer that exploited transition moments and set-piece opportunities.
It is the latest in a line of key departures this offseason for the club. Dayne St. Clair, the reigning MLS Goalkeeper of the Year, left in free agency to join Lionel Messi's Inter Mami. Longtime midfielder Hassani Dotson joined the Seattle Sounders in free agency, and Robin Lod left for the Chicago Fire.
