Sebastian Coe has admitted there is still uncertainty surrounding the timeline for Manchester United’s proposed new stadium project, despite progress being made behind the scenes.
The ambitious development, often described as a potential “Wembley of the North”, is expected to cost around £2 billion.
United have already worked through a funding plan for the project.
The new stadium received backing from the Football Association last November, signalling strong institutional support.
However, according to The Sun, Coe has now revealed that key challenges remain, particularly around land acquisition and scheduling.
Speaking about the project, Coe explained that securing the necessary land is proving to be a complex process.
He pointed out that large-scale regeneration developments often face such hurdles, referencing his experience with London’s 2012 Olympic bid.
Despite these complications, Coe insisted the project is moving in a positive direction.
He highlighted the broader vision behind the stadium, which goes beyond football and aims to drive economic growth, create jobs and support local communities.
The stadium forms part of a wider regeneration plan around Old Trafford.
Sir Jim Ratcliffe is playing a central role in pushing the initiative forward.
The vision is to use a world-class sporting venue as a catalyst for long-term development in the surrounding area.
Coe also acknowledged that the timeline remains “slightly uncertain” at this stage.
The scale of the project means progress is being made step by step, with multiple factors influencing how quickly plans can advance.
While there is clear optimism internally, there is also recognition that patience will be required.
The combination of land negotiations, planning processes and logistical challenges means there is no fixed completion date just yet.
For now, Manchester United’s proposed new stadium remains a long-term vision rather than an imminent reality.
It is something that continues to gather momentum.
