Manchester United have already seen one influential midfielder leave Old Trafford this summer, with Casemiro departing on a free transfer after four seasons at the club.
The Brazilian had become one of the senior figures in the dressing room and, at his best, gave United the aggression, experience and defensive awareness they had badly lacked before his arrival from Real Madrid.
His exit formed part of a wider reshaping of Michael Carrick’s midfield, with Carlos Baleba, Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos all arriving to strengthen an area that had needed refreshing.
Those additions have also made opportunities harder to come by for players further down the pecking order.
United have several young midfielders who now need regular senior football rather than another season spent between first-team training and sporadic appearances.
One of them looks set to get exactly that, with a temporary move away from Old Trafford now lined up.
Dan Gore is set to join Luton Town on loan, according to journalist Nathan Salt on X.
The move would give the 21-year-old another full season of senior football after a breakthrough campaign with Rotherham United.
Gore’s pathway has not been straightforward.
After making his United debut under Erik ten Hag against Crystal Palace in the League Cup and later appearing in the Premier League win over Aston Villa, his early loan spells were repeatedly disrupted by injury.
A quad problem on his Port Vale debut was followed by shoulder surgery, while a foot fracture then interrupted his first spell with Rotherham.
Last season was the first time he was able to build genuine momentum away from United.
Gore established himself in Rotherham’s midfield, became a trusted starter and was eventually named their Player of the Season after finally showing the consistency his previous setbacks had denied him.
That progress is significant because United had previously been expected to consider permanent exits for Gore, Toby Collyer and Ethan Wheatley.
Instead, Luton now appear ready to give Gore another platform to develop, with Jack Wilshere reportedly targeting him as part of the club’s League One promotion push.
For United, another strong loan could prove more valuable than selling him now, particularly after Gore finally put together the uninterrupted season his talent had been waiting for.
