Manchester United have backed off from their interest in Barcelona defender Ronald Araujo to bolster their defence during the summer. The Red Devils faced competition from their arch-rivals Liverpool for Araujo but both rival clubs have cooled off their interest.

United are currently 13th in the Premier League table and targeting the Europa League to salvage their miserable overall season. The Red Devils sacked Erik ten Hag and Ruben Amorim succeeded the Dutchman in the middle of the current season.

However, Amorim has also struggled to bring United back to the winning ways, pushing his different tactical style of play. The senior team has struggled to adjust to the new tactics with a three-man defence, showcasing their limitations with performances.

According to Fichajes, Man United and Liverpool have cooled off their interest in Barcelona star Araujo as a summer signing. Despite Araujo’s quality and importance at Barcelona, the 26-year-old defender has played more as a backup to the starting players.

Araujo is a typical modern-day central defender with immense capability to distribute passes from the backline and dictate the tempo. The 26-year-old has also just entered the peak year of his career and possesses the physique and height to thrive.

According to Transfermarkt, Araujo has a market value of €50.00m but Barcelona will surely demand a far greater price. The 26-year-old’s contract expires on June 30, 2031, which makes it very tough for any club to price him away.

Meanwhile, the Red Devils are facing severe financial restrictions due to the way they spent money in the past. United have signed many players for a high value in the recent decade and a majority of them failed miserably.

The situation also hurt their wage budget as they failed to move many of these players, happy to see out their lucrative contracts. United cannot afford to make the same mistakes under Amorim as they plan to sell a lot of surplus players to sign key recruitments next summer.
