Sandro Tonali has emerged as one of the transfers to watch this summer, as Manchester United launched him to the top of their shortlist earlier this year.
The Red Devils are looking to sign three new midfielders this summer, with Ederson already set to move from Atalanta.
Initially, a trio of Elliot Anderson, Carlos Baleba and Adam Wharton were scouted last summer, becoming priority targets for the Old Trafford midfield.
However, with Nottingham Forest, Brighton and Crystal Palace all wanting around £100 million for their men, things went cold around Baleba and Wharton.
United still kept a keen interest in Anderson, however Manchester City emerged as front-runners, so The Red Devils turned to Sandro Tonali.
Now though, City’s initial bid for Anderson has been rejected by Forest, and while discussions aren’t over for the move, they are looking at contingency plans.
Fabrizio Romano has explained that The Citizens are now looking to Tonali as a backup option in case they can’t get a deal for Elliot Anderson over the line.
However, they aren’t the only interested parties to threaten the move to Old Trafford.
It’s understood that, fresh on the back of winning the Premier League title, Arsenal are also keen on the Italy international.
At this time, his feelings on the matter aren’t known, and nor are his preferences for next season, whether that be a move to the Etihad, Emirates, Old Trafford or staying at St James’ Park.
Unfortunately for United, though, given Newcastle received £70 million for Anthony Gordon, it’s unlikely that The Magpies are going to settle for anything less than their £80 million asking price for Tonali.
Thankfully for The Red Devils, they still have some breathing room as City are yet to give up on Anderson, however, a deal will need to be done quickly to secure his move.
