Over the last few weeks and months, Tottenham Hotspur have been linked with several defenders across Europe. This is perhaps down to the fact that the club bosses are planning to reinforce the defensive unit during the summer transfer window.
Wolverhampton Wanderers left wing-back Rayan Ait-Nouri has been among the players to have caught Spurs’ attention. It is not surprising because he has been a consistent performer for Wolves in recent seasons, establishing himself as one of the best left full-backs in the Premier League.
Rayan Ait-Nouri was among the few bright spots in an otherwise disappointing campaign for Wolves. The Algerian netted four goals and supplied seven assists in 37 Premier League outings, demonstrating his attacking prowess once again. However, one of Tottenham’s Premier League rivals have intensified their interest in the 23-year-old.
According to a report from BBC Sport, Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola wants to sign Ait-Nouri, having made him a top target this summer. No agreement is yet in place but there is confidence between all parties that a move will happen.
Tottenham have been interested in Ait-Nouri but they are yet to actively start talks with Wolves over a possible move. This is why Man City upping their ante in the French-born Algerian international’s pursuit is a seismic blow for Spurs.
The Sky Blues have been operating without a specialist left-back since Benjamin Mendy left in august 2021. Josko Gvardiol has been playing at left-back over the last couple of seasons, and while he has performed well, Guardiola is seeking for a natural option before the 2025/26 campaign commences. And he has set his sights on Ait-Nouri, whose attacking qualities, dynamism coupled with defensive traits would make him a good fit at the Etihad Stadium.
Meanwhile, Destiny Udogie has been Tottenham’s first-choice left-back since 2023 under Ange Postecoglou. The Italian was excellent in his debut season but struggled in patches this past term, although he delivered a strong display in the Europa League final win over Man United in Bilbao in May.
With the North Londoners set to compete in the Champions League next term, they need depth in every single area of the pitch. After Sergio Reguilon’s release, Udogie is the only natural left-back left at Ange’s disposal. So, it is clear why the Hotspur Way chiefs are interested in another left-back. Now, with City apparently confident of getting a deal for Ait-Nouri over the line, Spurs must shift their focus elsewhere to bolster the left-back department.
