Manchester City's Benjamin Mendy has bail application denied a third time amid rape charges

Manchester City defender and France international Benjamin Mendy was arrested in August and charged with four counts of rape and one count of sexual assault. Mendy had a bail application denied last month, and ESPN reports the 27-year-old was refused bail a third time on Monday.

As explained by the BBC, Mendy is accused of attacking three women at his home in incidents said to have occurred in October 2020, early January 2021 and August of this year. City suspended him following his arrest.

"Manchester City can confirm that following his being charged by police today, Benjamin Mendy has been suspended pending an investigation," the club said in a brief statement on Aug. 26. "The matter is subject to a legal process and the Club is therefore unable to make further comment until that process is complete."

A 40-year-old man was also arrested on suspicion of rape as part of the investigation regarding Mendy but was released on bail. Mendy's trial date is set for Jan. 24, 2022.

Mendy joined City from Monaco in the summer of 2017 and has been part of three Premier-League-winning sides. He's also won two English League Cup titles with the club.
