Manchester United captain breaks silence after manager resigns

Manchester United Women are preparing for one of the biggest transitions in the club’s recent history, with a new era expected to begin before the 2026/27 Women’s Super League campaign gets underway.

After a summer of limited spending compared to several of their domestic rivals, the focus at Carrington has shifted towards building a squad capable of competing while placing greater trust in emerging talent.

The club are understood to be prioritising youth development as part of their long-term strategy, with a new head coach expected to oversee that vision.

Reports suggest that appointment is edging closer.

Eva Olid has emerged as Manchester United’s leading candidate after guiding Hearts to the Scottish league title last season and securing UEFA Women’s Champions League qualification.

An agreement is believed to be close as United prepare to move in a different direction.

The anticipated arrival comes just days after Marc Skinner left the club by mutual consent following five years in charge.

Skinner’s spell included several notable achievements, leading United to their first-ever major trophy by lifting the 2024 Women’s FA Cup, while also guiding the club into the UEFA Women’s Champions League knockout stage for the first time.

However, United finished fourth in the Women’s Super League last season, missing out on European qualification, and the former manager faced increasing criticism from sections of the fanbase before his departure was confirmed.

Speaking during United’s pre-season media day, captain Maya le Tissier revealed Marc Skinner personally addressed the squad before the announcement became public.

“There have obviously been a lot of challenges but a lot of nice moments as well.

“It was sad, but we move on now. He brought me to the club as a kid, and gave me the captaincy, two of the greatest honours of my life. I have a lot to thank him for.”

The defender also confirmed that neither she nor the senior players have been involved in selecting Skinner’s successor.

“We are not involved at all.

“We have heard it will be soon, which will be beneficial for us, we have our first pre-season game soon.”

Ella Toone echoed those thoughts, insisting the dressing room is ready to embrace whoever takes charge next.

“We have both played under so many different managers with different philosophies, we know we will give 100% and buy into what they want.

“The club’s ambition is to bring through the youth but also look after the older ones in the group.

“I can’t believe that’s us, I’m 26, I’m not that old, but we are leaders so must step up. Whoever comes in it will be exciting and a different journey.”

Despite the uncertainty surrounding the managerial position, both players stressed that the squad remains united.

Toone highlighted the close-knit environment that has existed since the team’s formation.

“I have been here from the start, and there has always been that family feeling around the team.

“We sit together in tough moments, there have been a few over the years.

“It might be difficult right now, but as soon as that new manager comes in we can knuckle down.

“We have to enjoy football and playing with each other.”

Le Tissier also issued a message directly to supporters as United prepare to enter a new chapter.

“Support the team no matter what, if you are proper fans you will be with us all the way.

“We give everything, and so did Marc.”

With the new WSL season now just weeks away, United are expected to finalise the appointment of their next manager soon as preparations continue for what promises to be a significant rebuilding period at the club.
