Michael Carrick is facing a growing battle to save his Manchester United career, with the club’s disastrous start to the season showing no signs of improvement.
The former midfielder earned the permanent position after an impressive interim spell, guiding United to third place in the Premier League last season.
However, that progress has completely unravelled.
United have managed just two victories in their opening 11 competitive matches, leaving them 13th in the Premier League with seven points from seven games.
Wednesday’s humiliating 4-1 Champions League defeat against Como extended their winless run to seven matches.
Nico Paz scored twice as Cesc Fabregas’ side dismantled United, with Carrick subsequently apologising to the travelling supporters.
Captain Bruno Fernandes also questioned the team’s tactical approach following the defeat, adding to the growing uncertainty surrounding the manager.
United have already begun identifying potential replacements, although Carrick is expected to remain in charge against Bournemouth on Sunday.
However, fresh reports suggest the club’s problems now extend beyond the pitch.
According to the Daily Mail, Manchester United director of football Jason Wilcox and recruitment director Christopher Vivell are reportedly divided over Carrick’s potential successor.
Vivell is understood to favour Julian Nagelsmann, having previously admired the German during his time at Chelsea.
The 39-year-old is currently available following Germany’s disappointing World Cup campaign.
However, Wilcox reportedly prefers a manager with established Premier League experience.
Former Newcastle boss Eddie Howe, Brighton’s Fabian Hurzeler, Unai Emery and Antonio Conte are among the candidates reportedly considered.
Hurzeler’s contract at Brighton could make any appointment particularly expensive, with no release clause understood to exist.
Despite the reported disagreement, United insist Wilcox and Vivell maintain a healthy working relationship.
Some senior figures also sympathise with Carrick, recognising that nine first-team players were unavailable against Como.
Nevertheless, potential successors have already been sounded out privately, leaving Carrick’s future increasingly uncertain.
