Manchester United have been linked to Morten Hjulmand but a deal will not be easy

Manchester United started the new Premier League season exactly the way they ended last year—disappointing. United showed energy and aggression for the first few minutes in a 1-0 loss to Arsenal, but the game changed completely when Altay Bayindir made a simple mistake in handling a corner. Riccardo Calafiori capitalised on the opportunity and scored with a header.

United then tried hard to equalise, but the real threat came from Bryan Mbeumo, who had a superb bicycle kick go wide and then had his header saved by David Raya. Benjamin Sesko was brought down by Ruben Amorim late on, but United never looked balanced. Starting the season with a defeat is proving to be costly for a team already living under pressure.

Romano’s report and United’s midfield problem

Fabrizio Romano‘s latest report has once again brought to the fore United’s midfield weakness. United have their eyes on Sporting Lisbon captain Morten Hjulmand, but the club have not yet started any concrete talks. Sporting are currently in no mood to sell their key players because Viktor Gyokeres has already moved to Arsenal. This is why Hjulmand’s move to Old Trafford does not look easy in this window.

United’s hesitant attitude is worrying. When Brighton indicated that Carlos Baleba would not be sold, United immediately gave up. After this, more names were discussed, but no concrete steps were taken. In this tussle, the team’s real problem—the lack of a young defensive midfielder—remains as it is.

The 26-year-old Sporting player has been Amorim’s favourite player and has consistently performed important performances for Sporting. After becoming captain, he has shown more maturity, and this is the quality United need, but the question is how much courage the club will show in the final weeks. Also, besides this, Manchester United are among the clubs that are interested in Nathan Collins.

“Manchester United can go for Morten Hjulmand, a midfielder from Sporting. Obviously, Ruben Amorim knows the player so well, he’s a player who’s always been appreciated by Amorim.

“But there are two points. First point, Sporting don’t want to sell other top players after losing Viktor Gyokeres this summer, so it would be a tough and difficult deal to do.

“Second point, Manchester United, at the moment, have not started concrete talks, real talks, for Morten Hjulmand.

“They are informed about the situation because he is a player who’s always been in their list, one of the players they’ve been following for sure.”

Opinion: What should United do?

To be honest, United should waste no time in at least making a move for Hjulmand. It won’t be easy to break Sporting’s no, but the team’s need is so great that it makes sense to try. Amorim’s long-standing relationship could make the deal a little easier, as his trust in the player is proven and can make a difference on a personal level. The Dane’s leadership and presence on the pitch could inject life into United’s midfield, as Casemiro is way past his prime.

However, it’s also true that United shouldn’t rely on just one player. The club need to look for options that can provide both aggression and creativity. But at the moment, if there’s one name that fits both Amorim’s vision and United’s need, it’s Hjulmand. It’s a tough deal, but it could be the right direction to go. However, we have to sell the out-of-favour players, and the club have not been able to do it yet. So, it remains to be seen how the transfer saga of the Sporting midfielder unfolds. Meanwhile, Manchester United are planning to make a late move for Adam Wharton this summer.
