Following the arrival of new head coach Ruben Amorim at Manchester United, the club now sits in pole position in the race for one of Europe's leading goal scorers this season.
As reported by the Manchester Evening News, Manchester United are now the favorites to sign Swedish striker Viktor Gyokeres from Amorim's former side Sporting CP, reuniting the player and coach at Old Trafford.
Gyokeres took Europe by storm last season with his prolific goal scoring, and has picked up right where he left off. Through the first 15 matches for Sporting CP this season, the striker has amassed an incredible 21 goals and two assists across both league play and the Champions League.
If there's one thing that Manchester United are struggling with this season it's scoring goals. The team has scored only 12 goals in the Premier League, along with only seven in the Europa League. Leading goal scorer Alejandro Garnacho has scored just three goals. If United hope to fight their way back this season, Gyokeres' goals are exactly what the team is missing.
When it comes to a deal for Gyokeres, it remains unclear what Sporting CP are looking for to consider selling their striker. According to Transfermarkt, Gyokeres currently has a transfer value of around $74 million. Whether United has that much money to spend on a transfer remains unclear, so United could look to potentially include a player like Antony or Joshua Zirkzee in a deal for the Swedish international.
Along with the search for their next striker, United's main focus is on their next Premier League match against Ipswich Town on November 24, which will be Amorim's first match in charge at his new club.
